What You Will Do
This position is open for external candidates only to apply.
This position will be filled at either the Design/Drafter 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Weapons Product Definition (E-11) group is looking for a Design/Drafter. E-11 provides model-based system engineering, mechanical design engineering, and computer-aided design (CAD) support to the active stockpile weapons systems, hydrodynamic tests, sub-critical experiments, and related qualification efforts.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. In this position you will independently define modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolve design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing. You will also generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, tooling, equipment and/or systems.
Design/Drafters at this level will perform complex calculations in support of unique technical problems for fit, form and function. In this position you may work self-directed or as part of a team and may mentor lower-level designers and may perform drawing checks occasionally.
E-11 Designer/Drafter key responsibilities:
- Create and revise CAD models, drawing packages, markups, and associated Product Data Management records
- Apply engineering policies, procedures, drafting standards, and design practices to assigned work.
- Apply materials knowledge, dimensioning strategies, ASME Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual expectations, and drawing checks.
- Independently lead novel design solutions for unique, non-standard, static, or dynamic design challenges.
- Work with engineers, customers, and stakeholders to define requirements and develop appropriate design solutions.
- Support/lead estimating, schedule planning, design strategies, and fabrication-readiness activities.
- Facilitate design reviews, clarify discipline interfaces, and resolve drawing/model compatibility issues.
- Develop or support novel design solutions for unique, non-standard, static, or dynamic design challenges.
- For full consideration, applicants must submit a resume and comprehensive cover letter addressing each minimum requirement of this position, and a supplemental portfolio or document detailing examples of past 3D CAD projects and works.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
3D Parametric CAD Experience:
Intermediate to Advanced understanding of:
- Three-dimensional parametric CAD systems
- Modeling and drawing drafting principles, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent
- Component and tool design, fixturing, schematics, and tooling equipment
- Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment
- Engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture
- High-level, three-dimensional parametric cad systems and associated product data management system
- Novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications
- The application of design limits in non-routine environments
- Engineering concepts and skills in product data management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition
Experience using industry standards
Experience using industry standards such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y series and design/drafting standards, including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as related to the design field
Collaboration/Teaming:
Responsible for the development and design of large projects and works directly with customers to define requirements for the design solution. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on diverse teams and collaborate on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from senior level technicians. It is an expectation to facilitate design reviews with stakeholders, addressing compatibility between design drawings and models with other disciplines, clarifying interfaces and resolving issues.
Communication:
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively to advise engineers in dimensioning strategies.
Design/Drafter 4
At this level, in addition to what was outlined at the lower level, a Design/Drafter 4 may serve as a team lead and subject matter expert on process or product improvement related activities. Act as an advanced subject matter expert who leads high-consequence CAD/drafting efforts, defines standards and best practices, and guides multidisciplinary design decisions. May assign tasks to and monitor work of employees in the group when assigned lead responsibility to support engineers in dimensioning strategies. Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of expert results with minimal direction. Involved with technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project.
