About the Role
Philadelphia United Methodist Church (PUMC) is seeking a relational, creative, and organized leader to serve as our Director of Programs. This part-time position will play a key role in creating meaningful opportunities for children and families to grow in faith, build relationships, and become connected to the life of our church.
Children’s ministry is at the heart of this role. The Director of Programs will lead and strengthen our Sunday morning children’s experience and Wednesday evening Fuel Up programming while recruiting, equipping, and supporting the volunteers who make these and other ministries possible.
The Director will also collaborate with the Senior Pastor, staff, and lay leaders to support intergenerational programming and help strengthen connections among children, families, and the broader PUMC community.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and strengthen PUMC’s children’s ministry, including Sunday School, Kids Church, seasonal programs, and other opportunities for Christian education and faith formation.
- Coordinate Wednesday evening Fuel Up programming for children and families.
- Recruit, equip, schedule, and support volunteers who serve in children’s programs and other assigned ministry areas.
- Develop and maintain engaging, age-appropriate programming and curriculum consistent with PUMC’s mission and United Methodist tradition.
- Create a welcoming Sunday-morning experience for children and families, with particular attention to helping new and visiting families connect with the church.
- Collaborate with staff and ministry leaders to support youth, adult, and intergenerational programs and identify opportunities for connection across generations.
- Coordinate assigned church-wide programs and special events, working with staff and volunteers to support effective planning, communication, and execution.
- Help develop sustainable systems for program participation, volunteer engagement, and newcomer connection as PUMC continues to grow.
Qualifications
- Experience in children’s ministry, Christian education, education, nonprofit programming, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate programs, events, and activities for children and families.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with children, parents, volunteers, staff, and church leaders.
- Experience recruiting, organizing, and supporting volunteers.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to Christian ministry and alignment with the mission and values of the United Methodist Church.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience; previous experience in a church or volunteer-based ministry environment.
Position Details
- Schedule: Approximately 25–30 hours per week. Hours will vary based on the church calendar and include regular Sunday mornings, Wednesday programming, and occasional evening or weekend events.
- Compensation: Approximately $40,000 annually, commensurate with experience and final position scope.

- Successful candidate must complete required background screening and comply with PUMC Safe Sanctuary policies.
