Who We Are
Wesley Shelley & Associates is a small team of psychologists who are passionate about providing the highest quality services to our clients. Our families come to us in vulnerable positions, they come to us for answers, for direction, for hope. This is a big responsibility, and so we constantly strive to be better and do better for our clients. Knowing that systems (school systems, medical systems, and the mental health system) can be big and impersonal, we also strive to make this process personal.
Our practice has several types of work. Our primary work is completing psychological evaluations for kids, teens, and adults through our private practice. These almost exclusively focus on questions surrounding neurodevelopmental disorders (autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities). In our private practice, we also provide counseling, parent coaching, Executive Function coaching, and consultations. Finally, we hold several contracts with school districts in central Virginia. These are generally flexible and allow for a balance of in-person work and virtual work.
While we strive to be a blessing to our clients and their families, we also strive to be a blessing for our staff. Know that when you join our team, you are joining our family, and we don’t take this lightly. After all, we cannot meet the highest possible standards of care for our clients unless we are valuing and supporting one another. For instance, in the past we’ve approved a flexible summer schedule with less hours so a team member can be at home more with their young kids.
Current job opening
This opening would be primarily contract work with a public school, but on a hybrid schedule: completing testing and attending meetings in-person for part of the week and then writing reports, communicating, and completing paperwork for the remainder of the week. Talk with us about schools you will be assigned to, they are typically within a 45-minute radius of Charlottesville.
Over time and as appropriate, we will add responsibilities through our private practice. This may be teaming up with a privately licensed psychologist to complete evaluations and/or providing Executive Function or parent coaching. The ultimate goal over time would be for you to apply for your private practice license, receive regular supervision from one of our psychologists, pass your exam, and shift your schedule—still providing contract services to a local school district but adding more and more time through our private practice.
An expectation of excellence and supervision to get there
We have built our practice through not only holding ourselves to super-high standards, but also in meeting these super-high standards. When you join our team, you are signing up to be serious about your professional growth--think of it like an apprenticeship. Yes, we are looking for candidates with good experience, but what we value even more is someone willing to push themselves hard to do better and be better for our clients. Someone willing to take a very critical look at the work psychologists do and press forward with small and big tweaks for the benefit of our clients.
So, from the very start of the job, you will receive direct and extensive supervision. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have, we will take a long and hard look at your workflow, your report-writing, your counseling skills, your oral communication skills, and more. And we will push you to improve. And then we’ll push you to improve even more. It doesn’t matter if you already hold a private practice license, we are going to provide extensive supervision so that you can get caught up to speed with our standards and quality of care.
