PURPOSE:
The purpose of the senior designer position is to create in-house ability to complete water and sewer relocation design in-house, and create and maintain design and construction standards. There are 40 water line relocation, sewer line relocation or lift station rehabilitation projects scheduled for the next three (3) years carrying an estimated design fee of $1,300,000.
DUTIES
Participates in early coordination meetings with staff to understand project goals, determine project alignment, and develop a project work plan.
Creates detailed drawings using computer-assisted drafting systems (CAD) of water and sewer lines and appurtenances.
Draws maps, diagrams, and profiles, using cross sections and surveys, to represent elevations, topographical contours, subsurface formations and structures.
Drafts plans and detailed drawings for structures, installations, and construction projects such as water and sewer line relocations, sewer lift stations, and water and sewer rehabilitation.
Coordinates with other Utilities and municipal jurisdictions to minimize relocation and project costs for proposed project improvements.
Reviews sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data received from civil engineers to ensure that they conform to design concepts.
Prepares permit applications for local, state, and federal governing agencies for submittal by the Director.
Prepares preliminary specifications and contract project manual.
Compiles proposed pay items, project quantities, and cost estimates.
Updates GIS maps after construction is complete and record drawings have been created.
Creates and maintains drafting standards for the Utility Engineering department including coordination with the GIS coordinator, capital projects managers, and planning & development managers for inclusion of drafting requirements in all capital and developer record drawing submittal.
Assists project development managers with training and templates required for private development engineering firms.
Revises and maintains construction standards including coordination with capital project managers and field personnel, revisions to Utility accepted standard details, and posting standard details on public access website.
Assists in the collection of project record drawing information.
Assists in surveying tasks to collect topography for project locations.
Assists in collection of property line and easement information and recreating apparent property and easement lines in topography drawing.
Performs other duties as assigned and assists other employees as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Drafting and Design Technology is required.
Five (5) years of technical experience related to water, wastewater, GIS, or civil engineering, preferably in public works and municipal infrastructure development.
Other combination of training, education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the functions of this position may be considered.
Knowledge with AutoCad and Civil3D is required. Knowledge in ESRI SDE, Arcpad, and Arcmap is preferred. Experience establishing and maintaining technical and construction standards is preferred.
Must obtain/maintain a valid Driver’s License.
Candidate should possess practical knowledge of tools, machinery, and equipment of the trade with good mechanical aptitude and knowledge of the water distribution and sewer collection system service area.
