The Technician Assistant provides invaluable support to the veterinarians and technicians while learning the WHY, not just the how, behind emergency pet care. During patient care and treatments, monitoring stable hospitalized pets, maintaining inventory, preparing prescriptions, performing routine in-house laboratory work, educating clients regarding veterinary care and procedures, and assisting with prep of surgical procedures the technician assures that finished work and methods used are technically accurate, and teaches you along the way.
This position is intended for those that have an existing foundation of General Veterinary Medicine, and are interested in Emergency medicine, but need someone to invest the time to grow them. We are that team.
Position type and expected hours of work:

Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication, client service, and interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate effectively and work with clients, patients, and fellow staff members in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.
- Possession of strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize patients/tasks based on urgency and disease process with attention to detail.
- Strong analytical/critical thinking skills: Understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Apply veterinary knowledge to patient care as changes in the patient's condition are noted by alerting the Veterinarian and taking appropriate steps to intervene.
- Strong sense of integrity, maintaining the ethical standards of the Veterinary profession, personal responsibility, accountability, and confidentiality of clients, doctors, and all staff.
- Proficient in basic medical math and Veterinary medical terminology
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
Clerical
- Reviews and interprets treatment sheets for hospitalized patients to ensure understanding of patient care needs.
- Document and maintain medical records with a thorough record of patient care, treatments/diagnostics performed, intake, and output.
Customer Service
- Communicate with and educate clients regarding disease processes, medications prescribed, and answer questions regarding care or medical status of their pet, addressing their concerns and answering them appropriately only under the direction of Technician.
- Competently facilitate incoming calls, providing accurate information to clients concerning fees, hospital policies and procedures, etc.
- At times, requires dealing with unpleasant, angry or discourteous people
Technical
- Patient restrain of non-aggressive and difficult or contentious animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures.
- Basic Phlebotomy skills (placement of IV catheters and blood drawing)
- Set up specimens and prepare slides for Technician or Doctor interpretation (fecal, ear cytology, blood smear, etc...) as required.
- Ability to set up for surgical or sedated procedures (OR suite to simple laceration in the treatment room) including anesthetic monitors, surgical supplies and equipment.
- Ability to clean, sterilize and appropriately wrap surgical instruments and packs.
- Take radiographs using proper PPE, following proper safety procedures.
- Give injections, as directed by technician or veterinarian - intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous.
- Perform basic patient care treatments on hospitalized patients per treatment sheet orders
- Implement appropriate animal husbandry skills to decrease disease spread, injury and stress to patients.
- Obtain basic vitals and document, recognizing normal/abnormal physical exam parameters.
- Document and report changes in patient condition.
- Attention to detail in patient care, preparing prescription labels and appropriately package medications as directed by the veterinarian.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay: $15.00 - $21.00 per hour
