- Position Summary — Facilities Support Staff
The General Custodian/Maintenance Person is a valued member of the Beth El community, responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming synagogue environment. This position supports daily operations through custodial services, light maintenance, and event setup for worship services, religious school, lifecycle events, and community programs. This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt, non-union position reporting to the Facilities Director & Events Manager and/or the Executive Director. Salary approximately $20/hour commensurate with experience
Essential Duties
Custodial Care
· Clean and maintain all assigned areas, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, sanctuary spaces, social halls, and kitchens.
· Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, disinfect surfaces, and empty trash and recycling.
· Restock restroom and kitchen supplies.
· Perform scheduled deep-cleaning tasks as needed.
· Other duties as assigned.
Maintenance & Facility Support
· Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, minor painting or patching, and tightening fixtures.
· Monitor building conditions and report maintenance issues promptly.
· Assist with seasonal needs, including snow and ice removal, salting walkways, and outdoor cleanup.
· Other duties as assigned.
Worship, Program & Event Support
· Set up and break down rooms for Shabbat services, High Holy Days, religious school, meetings, and special events, including food set-up and clean-up.
· Arrange tables, chairs, podiums, and other equipment as needed.
· Assist with basic audio/visual setup when directed.
· Ensure spaces are returned to their standard configuration after use.
· Other duties as assigned.
Safety, Security & Shabbat Sensitivity
· Follow all safety procedures and proper use of cleaning products and equipment.
· Secure the building as required, including locking doors and checking safety conditions.
· Respond promptly to spills, leaks, and weather-related hazards.
· Demonstrate awareness of and respect for Shabbat, Jewish holidays, sacred spaces, and religious objects, including minimizing disruption during services and observances.
· Perform work on Shabbat or holidays only as scheduled and in accordance with synagogue policies.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED preferred.
· Experience in custodial work, maintenance, or related fields.
· Ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English.
· Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
· Sensitivity to working in a religious and communal environment.
· Basic knowledge of cleaning equipment and safe chemical use.
· Valid driver’s license preferred.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
· Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and ladder use.
· Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
