About the Role
R.L. Vaught & Associates is an established land surveying firm serving Martin and Palm Beach Counties. We are seeking an experienced and dependable Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations across a variety of land development, infrastructure, and construction projects. As crew chief, you will be responsible for directing field personnel, operating survey equipment, and ensuring that all data collected meets quality and accuracy standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise survey field crews, including instrument operators and/or rodmen/chainmen.
- Operate and maintain Topcon total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and data collectors.
- Perform boundary, topographic, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
- Interpret legal descriptions, plats, construction plans, and survey control documents.
- Ensure all field work is completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
- Communicate daily with the office survey team and project managers regarding field progress and issues.
- Maintain accurate and legible field notes and records.
- Troubleshoot field conditions and resolve discrepancies in the field.
- Enforce company safety policies and job site protocols.
Qualifications
- Minimum 4–6 years of field survey experience, with at least 1–2 years in a crew lead or supervisory role.
- Proficiency with total station and GPS/GNSS equipment, or demonstrated ability to learn Topcon instrumentation and data collection systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, legal descriptions, and survey documents.
- Strong mathematical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and traverse rough terrain
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Topcon total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, and Topcon data collectors (FC series or equivalent).
- Familiarity with Topcon MAGNET Field or similar data collection software.
