Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Optician role based in Traverse City, MI. The Optician will assist patients in selecting frames and lenses, provide expert guidance on lens options and coatings, and ensure proper measurements for accurate fitting. Daily responsibilities include verifying prescriptions, ordering and inspecting lenses, adjusting and repairing eyewear, and educating patients on eyewear care and lens technologies. The role also involves supporting the optometrist during busy periods, coordinating with the front desk on scheduling and follow-up, and maintaining an organized, clean optical dispensary. The Optician will be expected to deliver consistent, courteous customer service, address patient questions and concerns, and contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment.
Qualifications
- Strong foundational knowledge of optics, lens types, and frame materials, with the ability to recommend appropriate lens designs and features.
- Experience supporting optometry services, including understanding prescriptions, collaborating with eye care professionals, and coordinating with eye exam workflows.
- Able to interpret, explain and bill patient's vision insurance and collect remaining balance from patient.
- Demonstrated customer service and customer satisfaction skills, with a focus on clear communication, patience, and problem-solving in a clinical or retail setting.
- Familiarity with eye exams, basic vision terminology, and the ability to explain exam outcomes and eyewear recommendations in accessible language.
- High attention to detail for measurements, adjustments, and quality checks of eyewear; ability to perform minor frame repairs and precise fitting.
- Comfort using practice management or optical ordering software; basic proficiency with computers and electronic records.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; formal opticianry training, certification, or licensing (where applicable) is preferred.
- Prior experience in an optical, eye care, or medical office environment is beneficial but not mandatory for qualified, fast-learning candidates.
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
