Direct Support Professional – Group Employment Services
Position Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Group Employment Services provides direct support, instruction, and job coaching to individuals with developmental disabilities participating in community-based employment and vocational activities. This position is responsible for helping individuals develop and maintain employment skills while supporting their independence, productivity, safety, and successful participation in the workplace.
The ideal candidate is dependable, patient, observant, professional, and comfortable teaching practical job skills through hands-on instruction and modeling.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct support and job coaching to individuals at community employment sites.
- Teach individuals how to perform assigned job duties using modeling, demonstration, prompting, repetition, and other appropriate teaching strategies.
- Break job duties into manageable steps and provide individualized instruction based on each person's abilities and support needs.
- Encourage individuals to complete tasks as independently as possible while providing support when needed.
- Assist individuals in learning new job duties and adapting to changes in job responsibilities.
- Monitor work performance, productivity, quality, and accuracy.
- Provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to promote successful job performance.
- Gradually reduce prompts and supports when appropriate to encourage independence.
- Identify barriers to successful employment and communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Support individuals in developing appropriate workplace behaviors, including punctuality, following directions, staying on task, appropriate communication, and working cooperatively with others.
- Complete documentation on time and accurately.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, in vocational services, employment services, customer service, manufacturing, housekeeping, food service, retail, or other workplace environments is preferred.
- Experience providing direct support, job coaching, training, or instruction is preferred.
- Must be able to successfully complete required agency and regulatory training.
- Must possess reliable transportation and be able to travel to community employment sites as required.
- Must be able to meet all applicable background check and employment requirements.
Work Environment
This position primarily works in community-based employment settings rather than a traditional office environment. Employment sites may include businesses, warehouses, retail locations, restaurants, nonprofit organizations, community facilities, and other locations where individuals receive vocational or employment supports.
The DSP must be comfortable working in changing environments, interacting with members of the public, performing physical job tasks when appropriate, and supporting individuals while maintaining professional workplace expectations.
