Essential Functions:

Patient Registration
Identifies all specimens upon receipt, notes irregularities or discrepancies.
Confirms courier count.
Assigns an accession number to each surgical case based on client as well as specimen designation.
Accurately enters patient information into laboratory information system to include:
Patient name, date of birth, sex and medical record number
Accurately enters remaining patient demographics including address and phone number.
Merge patients with name, date of birth and third common unique identifier in common.
Unique identifier: medical record number, address, social security number.
Accessioning
Accurately accessions client/physician data including interface numbers, cc physicians, part type, specimen source, time and date of collection, protocols.
Scans all paperwork/documentation in the LIS.
Makes phone calls on specimens with discrepancies.
Documents corrections with appropriate information on the requisition and in the LIS.
Prints appropriate color/number of blocks, at some locations.
Count and document number of blocks per specimen class
Place blocks in and start processors.
Set up holdover specimens.
All Accessioning Staff
Demonstrates an ability to learn the job duties assigned and develops an understanding of how all the functions fit together.
Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements.
Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
Other duties as assigned.

Education:
High School Diploma required
Associate’s degree Preferred

Summary/Objective: Accessioner opens specimen transport bags and compares identifications on requisition to that on specimen containers. Accessions specimens into LIS (laboratory information system). Some locations require printing appropriate color/number of tissue cassettes.
