We are seeking an experienced Controller to support a mission-driven organization in Philadelphia on a temporary basis. This role will oversee all accounting and financial operations, ensure compliance, and partner with leadership to support financial strategy and decision-making. This is an immediate need with a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite, 2 remote).
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, general ledger, payroll, and revenue recognition
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
- Prepare and present financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and regulatory requirements
- Manage grant accounting, including monitoring restricted funds and ensuring compliance with funding requirements
- Oversee and coordinate audits and support preparation of required filings (including 990)
- Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets
- Partner with senior leadership to provide financial insights and strategic recommendations
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and compliance
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
- Proven experience managing audits and internal controls
- Strong supervisory and team leadership skills
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Excel
Preferred
- CPA or CPA-track
- Experience with grant accounting and fund management
- Experience working in a mission-driven or nonprofit environment
- Familiarity with large ERP systems and financial reporting tools
