1:1 Special Education Nurse
The 1:1 Special Education Nurse provides continuous, direct nursing care and medical monitoring to an assigned individual student who is medically fragile. The nurse delivers complex physical and clinical care throughout the school day, during specialized transport, and across all educational environments to ensure the student can safely access their educational program.
Essential Functions :
Provides continuous, 1:1 direct nursing care to an assigned student in accordance with the student's Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP), Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and physician orders.
Maintains immediate readiness to prepare and administer emergency rescue medications (e.g., intranasal/rectal anti-seizure medications, IM epinephrine auto-injectors, emergency glucagon) as specified in the student's EAP.
Administers prescribed daily, PRN (as-needed), and emergency medications via all authorized routes (including oral, sublingual, topical, inhaled, enteral tube, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intranasal) in accordance with Illinois Board of Nursing guidelines and district policy.
Administers specialized medical procedures, which may include but are not limited to: o Continuous or intermittent oxygen monitoring and delivery system management. o Clean or sterile urinary catheterization. o Oral, nasal, and/or tracheal suctioning and airway maintenance. o Enteral tube feedings (G-tube/J-tube) and medication administration via tube. o Blood glucose monitoring and insulin/seizure emergency medication administration.
Operates, monitors, and cleans specialized medical equipment (e.g., suction machines, pulse oximeters, feeding pumps, oxygen concentrators).
Monitors hardware, equipment, and medical supplies daily. Promptly notifies parents/guardians and school administration of faulty equipment or low supply stock. ? Manages the secure storage, daily log reconciliation, counting, and documentation of controlled substances and prescription medications in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Accompanies and provides nursing support to the assigned student throughout the entire school day, including classroom instruction, physical education, passing periods, lunches, assemblies, and field trips.
Accompanies the student during door-to-door transportation to and from school, and on off-site educational visits, ensuring safety and continuous care during transit.
Collaborates under the direction of the student's Case Manager and Special Education Teacher to assist the student with educational programming, accommodations, and functional daily activities.
Maintains strict confidentiality regarding student medical records, IEP information, and personal care in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
Maintains complete, precise, and timely daily nursing logs, medical charts, and procedure documentation as required by district policy and Illinois law.
Communicates regularly and professionally regarding health status updates with the student's family/guardian, Case Manager, Building Health Office, and Student Services Support Team. ? Participates as an active team member in problem-solving and multidisciplinary team meetings (e.g., IEP, 504) as requested, providing relevant medical data and observational input.
Attends mandated district training, general staff meetings, and professional development sessions appropriate for the role.
Collaborates with district and building leadership to ensure equity is infused in practice and remains at the forefront of efforts to support students with unique medical needs.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience and Qualifications :
Valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Illinois.
Current Adult and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
Demonstrated proficiency and clinical experience in pediatric or adolescent nursing, including complex tasks (tracheostomy/suctioning, catheterization, G-tube care, oxygen monitoring).
Strong written and verbal communication skills to understand clinical directions and effectively interface with students, parents, and school staff.
Basic computer literacy to maintain electronic nursing documentation and standard digital communication.
Ability to work independently with sound judgment under established procedures and physician guidelines.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate satisfactory performance in each essential duty. The requirements listed below represent the skills and abilities required for this position.
Physical Strength & Endurance: Constantly requires strength and endurance for Responds immediately to medical deterioration, distress, or emergency events, initiating CPR/AED and emergency response protocols as required. Lifting, transferring, positioning, and repositioning students (including using mechanical lifts, adaptive equipment, and manual transfers).
Body Movement: Constantly requires physical mobility including stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, handling, fine-motor dexterity, and moving quickly in response to medical needs.
Travel: Daily travel aboard specialized school transport vehicles with the assigned student; ability to move fluidly around high school facilities and off-site locations.
Environmental Safety: Frequent handling of bodily fluids and medical waste; potential exposure to infectious diseases and specialized medical equipment hazards.
Behavioral Response: Ability to participate in district-approved crisis intervention and behavior management procedures when necessary for student safety.
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 204 contracted days.
SALARY: Supervisory Grade One $61,918- $77,398 Plus Benefits Package
EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 2026
