Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Laboratory Supervisor
Role Overview
CMT Laboratory Supervisor II, under direction, will supervise, coordinate, and train laboratory and field construction materials testing technician; direct crews in the field and provide accurate logging of samples and tests and documentation of other pertinent data; and assist in site coordination of testing services on the construction sites.
Key DUTIES and Responsibilities
- Employee shall have the following minimum duties:
- Self-perform plant inspections, material source inspections, and field and laboratory testing
- Conduct and supervise plant inspections, laboratory testing and the following construction materials testing operations:
- Display samples for viewing
- Organize samples
- Check and verify all calculations
- Evaluate test data
- Perform statistical analysis on data sets and prepare run charts
- Reports data under the Direct Report’s supervision in accordance with established procedures
- Coordinate individual assignments for laboratory and field technicians
- Serve as dispatcher in making daily individual assignments for laboratory and field technicians
- Assist with preparation and processing of reports as well as other administrative duties
- Perform operational walk through and competency testing
- Check time records of technicians daily for accuracy and approval
- Perform or oversee routine maintenance of laboratory and field testing equipment as well as the calibration and proper documentation of all applicable equipment
- Recommend equipment for procurement
- Perform or oversee performance of specialized field services and troubleshoots processes and client concerns
- Maintain an adequate stock of routine supplies and materials
- Conduct performance reviews of assigned technicians
- Assign general housekeeping duties including trash removal, sweeping floors, dusting, cleaning windows, and storage and disposal of test samples
- Provide training and instructional guidance to field and laboratory technicians
- Review project plans and specifications to prepare test scope
- Employee shall have the following minimum responsibilities
- Safe utilization, storage and maintenance of all documents and tools
- Contact Direct Report for priorities and deadlines
- Update Direct Report on progress and delays on every task or assignment
- Safe usage and maintenance of individually assigned company vehicle and field equipment
- Carry out assigned duties in accordance with established procedures
- Meet established project deadlines
- Maintenance of license and/or certifications at the time of employment of obtained during employment
- Oversee the performance of field and laboratory testing
- Monitor professional practice updates, including AASHTO and TxDOT protocols
- Track project budgets for assigned projects/areas
- Record number of billable tests
- Track direct expenses
- Notify HSE Manager of safety accidents and health incidents
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Possess the following minimum qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Has minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in construction materials field and laboratory testing with two (2) year experience in supervision
- Have and maintain four (4) or more following certifications:
- ACI Field Grade 1 Technician
- ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- ACI Aggregate Testing Technician
- TxAPA SB101, SB102, SB103, SB201 and SB202 in soil/base
- TxAPA AGG101 in aggregates
- TxAPA Level 1A, Level 1B and Level 2 in hot mix asphalt
- Possess extensive knowledge of
- Materials used in highway, bridge and aviation construction
- Material testing methods, processes and procedures
- Possess thorough knowledge of
- Engineering principles, practices, and methods
- Engineering fundamentals
- Engineering calculations
- Laboratory quality management techniques
- Construction materials test tracking and reporting techniques
- Possess considerable knowledge of
- Heavy civil construction plans, construction inspection procedures, and specifications
- Personal computers and the use of applicable software
- Implementation methods and procedures for material evaluation and acceptance
- Possess working knowledge of
- Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics
- Human resource policies and procedures
- Effective supervisory techniques

- Use hand tools such as sledgehammers, shovels and picks
- Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Analyze, problem solve, and recommend solutions
- Troubleshoot material and testing deficiencies and develop solutions
- Required to

- Wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements

- Shall possess valid Texas driver’s license and meet firm’s auto insurability requirements.

- Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy.
Physical Demands
- Physical examination required to obtain medical clearance to work.
- Clean driving record and capable of being insured for driving company vehicles.
