Job Overview
The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial and accounting operations of our charter school customers, with a focus on customer billing, accounts receivable, and financial reconciliation. This role involves detailed management of accounts payable, payroll entries, and financial documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance across all school and company accounts.
Responsibilities
- Customer Billing and Accounts Receivable: Manage customer billing processes and ensure timely collection of accounts receivable for all schools and TES/TCC accounts.
- Bank Reconciliation: Perform bank reconciliations for all school accounts and TES/TCC accounts, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies promptly.
- Accounting Communications: Respond to accounting-related emails, providing clear and timely information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Accounts Payable Management: Enter new vendors and process new bills for all schools, maintaining accurate records and ensuring timely payments.
- 1099 Processing: Prepare and process 1099 forms for all schools and TES/TCC, ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
- Financial Compilation: Compile financial reports for review and approval by the Senior Accountant and Director of Finance, ensuring all data is accurate and up to date.
- Payroll Journal Entries: Enter payroll journal entries for all schools, ensuring proper allocation and documentation.
- School Funding Entries: Manage journal entries related to school funding, ensuring accuracy and adherence to financial guidelines.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (required)
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience (required)
- Experience in education, nonprofit, public sector or fund accounting (strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of GAAP
- Proficient in accounting software (specifically QuickBooks Online)
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, complex formulas)
- Comfortable performing month-end close, reconciliations and journal entries
- Comfortable working independently and leading a team
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret financial data and communicate clearly to non-financial stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Comfortable working with diverse stakeholders - school leaders, board members, auditors
- High level of integrity and discretion
