The Protection & Control Technician I supports the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of protection and control systems used in power substations. This entry-level role is ideal for candidates with foundational electrical knowledge seeking hands-on experience in utility and substation environments.
The position requires strong technical aptitude, the ability to interpret electrical schematics, and a commitment to safety and operational reliability.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying systems
- Install and program microprocessor relays and related control devices
- Perform calibration and functional testing of protection relays
- Support monitoring systems within substations
- Assist assigned project leads with field assignments
- Support development and maintenance of protection and control documentation
- Maintain compliance with safety standards and operating procedures
Work with equipment including:
- Microprocessor relays
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
- Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
- Sensors
- Pumps and motors
- AC and DC systems
- Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and best practices in protection and control
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related field preferred
- 0–3 years of experience in controls technician or related role
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
- Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs
- Experience with AC and DC systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Must live within reasonable commuting distance to assigned APC office location
