American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Hospice/Palliative Care position in the Rowan/Salisbury Region, requiring a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and a strong background in home health/hospice and skilled nursing settings.

Outpatient hospice setting serving the Rowan/Salisbury Region

Primarily geriatric patient population with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live
-
Average daily census of 63 patients with approximately 5 visits per day

Day shift, 5x8-hour shifts, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
-
On-call rotation required Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM, shared among unit RNs; volunteers may cover weeknight call (Monday–Thursday) when the designated RN is unavailable

Outpatient nurses rotate approximately 2 evening on-call shifts (8 PM–8 AM) on Saturday and Sunday every 4–5 weeks; a nurse triage service screens incoming calls and contacts the on-call RN if a visit is needed

Active NC RN license or compact RN license (may be pending at time of consideration)

Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required

Home health/hospice and skilled nursing setting experience required

End-of-life care skills required: survivorship/after-treatment care and cultural awareness

Advanced pain management skills required: WHO Analgesic Ladder, adjuvant therapy, breakthrough dosing, pediatric dosage calculation, medication tolerance, pain assessment, pharmacologic and non-pharmacological interventions, proper medication disposal, types of pain (somatic, visceral, neuropathic) and their treatment, and use of verbal/nonverbal pain scales

Professional knowledge required: goal setting with patients/families, intake assessment and interview, Medicare state regulations, patient/family education and support, and positioning/preventive shearing and pressure ulcer care

Symptom assessment and management skills required: altered mental status, anorexia and cachexia, aphasia, constipation/diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and pressure ulcer staging

Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (may be pending at time of consideration but must be on file prior to start)

Provide in-home hospice visits, including PRN and death visits, to patients in the Rowan/Salisbury Region

Preferred skills include death pronouncement, death/dying counseling, identifying spiritual needs, perideath and postmortem family care, advanced directives, medical futility and abandonment, organ donation, palliative sedation, withholding/withdrawing treatment, equianalgesic opioid dosing, PCA pump management, phlebotomy, IV management (peripheral IVs, central lines, ports), DME authorization, and ascites management

Orientation consists of approximately 40 hours of unit-specific training in addition to general facility orientation; no RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation

Pre-start online modules (approximately 4–5 hours for this non-acute role) must be completed prior to start and annually thereafter

All candidates must interview via Zoom before an offer will be extended

Navy blue scrubs required; scrubs are not provided

Up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO beyond 7 days requires facility approval; no RTO during the first week of the assignment

Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Any candidate who previously worked for Novant Health or New Hanover as permanent, PRN, or employed staff must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required

Travel pairs are welcome; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
-
RTO after booking is not permitted and cannot be arranged onsite; call-offs or unapproved RTO may result in contract cancellation
