Position Overview:
The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment used in residential waste collection. This includes front-loaders, rear-loaders, roll-off trucks, and support vehicles. The Mechanic ensures all equipment is maintained in a safe, reliable, and compliant condition to support daily operations.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and scheduled repairs on diesel and gas-powered fleet vehicles
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air brake systems
- Perform DOT inspections and maintain compliance with all safety and maintenance regulations
- Respond to on-road breakdowns or service calls as needed
- Maintain accurate service and repair records for each vehicle
- Inspect, repair, or replace parts including engines, transmissions, brakes, axles, tires, and suspension systems
- Operate diagnostic tools and computer-based systems to identify faults
- Support fleet safety by ensuring all repairs meet manufacturer and safety standards
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the shop
- Collaborate with drivers and supervisors to identify recurring issues or safety concerns
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements
- Assist in training junior technicians or helpers as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred
- Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic, technician, or heavy truck mechanic
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, air brakes, and diesel engines
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and repair instructions
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A or B preferred
- Must supply own hand tools (specialty tools provided by company)
- Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations
- ASE certification or equivalent preferred (or willingness to obtain)
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
Working Conditions:
- Shop and yard environment with exposure to noise, grease, waste materials, and weather conditions
- Must be able to lift and move up to 75 lbs, bend, crawl under vehicles, and stand for extended periods
- May be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, or emergency shifts as needed
- Occasional work in outdoor settings or roadside assistance situations
