POSITION SUMMARY: Paraeducators work in a school or classroom along with certified and licensed educators to provide instruction, guidance, and support to students with or without disabilities under the direction of the licensed educator. They provide assistance to students who may or may not have advanced personal, behavioral, and instructional needs. Paraeducators assist MTHCS teachers with general daily classroom activities, caring for the physical and emotional health and safety of the students while affirming their abilities, striving to promote dignity in all relationships. Paraeducators work to create a positive and nurturing learning environment that supports the District's high expectations for all students. This includes providing assistance to students with learning, comprehension, test taking needs, and demonstrating their learning in a modality that best shows their knowledge of the content. This individual will complete a combination of administrative and educational duties to maintain a calm, positive, and efficient environment for learning. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
● Assists teachers with daily instruction activities for assigned students with the goal of the student demonstrating their best work and understanding the provided curriculum.
● Provides assistance and support to students for personal (i.e. hygiene, sanitation, behavior modeling, etc.) and instructional needs. This may include but is not limited to:
- Hand-over-hand assistance
- Individualized or small group review of educational materials
- Delivery of instruction that may serve as a review or to reinforce skills
- Toileting or diapering assistance
- Mobility assistance of a student
- Moving of specific equipment for student access
- Employing District-approved de-escalation strategies
● Performs supplemental student support duties including but not limited to assisting with student arrival and departure, lunch duty, perform independent supervision of class, recess duties, and bus escort
● Monitors student behavior & progress. Provides feedback to cooperating teacher/s regarding progress and/or challenges that aids in the delivery of instruction.
● At the instructional staffs' direction, assists assigned students with the administration and completion of tests in accordance with IEPs, applicable District and/or Ohio policies & procedures.
● Employs age and ability appropriate strategies and techniques to reinforce lessons with students with special learning concerns.
● Chaperones students through school building to ensure safety and effective engagement in personal and instructional activities
. ● Performs supplemental student support duties including but not limited to bus escort, therapy assisting, mobility assisting etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
● Assembles and prepares materials for instructional lectures and presentations. Sets up and operates instructional equipment. Files documents and performs other clerical duties where appropriate.
● Assists with documenting students' progress in appropriate databases. This may include behavior or academic data collection.
● Collaborates with district colleagues on assigned projects & initiatives.
● Responding to any communication as required (emails, walkie calls, ect.)
● Performs other duties as assigned.
LEVEL OF SUPERVISION: No supervision responsibilities. May temporarily report to other District leaders on special projects and/or initiatives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
● Successful completion of Ohio PRAXIS or 48 semester hours of college coursework towards an approved associate’s degree.
● Some experience is preferred
● Good relationship building, communication and presentation skills with school age children & parents. Good interpersonal relationship skills including cultural sensitivity & competence.
● Ability to use relational techniques and strategies to elicit positive behavior & compliance from students.
● Ability to efficiently multitask on a daily basis.
● Proficiency with use of PC hardware & basic software (i.e. Microsoft office), email, and office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, scanner, telephone, etc.). Proficiency with databases.
● Ability to preserve confidentiality of student records.
CLEARANCES:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance (FBI/BCI)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
● Performance of duties requires constant standing, walking, handling, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, hearing, and eye/hand/foot coordination. Frequent sitting and reaching. Occasional lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying, kneeling, and engagement in repetitive motions.
● Performance of primary duties takes place in a school environment with constant exposure to noise. Occasional exposure to temperature changes. Constant medium to heavy physical effort.
