REPORTS TO: Production Manager or General Manager
DEPARTMENT: Paint Department
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review assigned Repair Orders (ROs) and production schedule.
- Attend daily production/release meetings.
- Communicate with Paint Technicians regarding vehicle status and priorities.
- Verify all parts and repair work are ready for refinishing.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the day.
- Follow all safety and OSHA requirements.
PAINT PREPARATION PROCESS
Step 1 – Vehicle Inspection
- Review repair area for completeness.
- Inspect repaired panels for damage, imperfections, or contamination.
- Notify Production Manager or Paint Technician of any concerns before proceeding.
Step 2 – Surface Cleaning
- Wash and clean repair areas thoroughly.
- Remove grease, wax, dirt, silicone, and other contaminants using approved cleaners.
- Blow off vehicle surfaces with clean compressed air as needed.
Step 3 – Sanding
- Sand repaired surfaces according to manufacturer and paint manufacturer recommendations.
- Feather-edge surrounding paint surfaces.
- Remove all scratches, imperfections, and surface defects.
- Ensure smooth transitions between repaired and existing surfaces.
Step 4 – Masking
- Protect all non-painted surfaces including:
o Glass o Moldings o Trim o Lights o Adjacent panels o Wheels and tires as needed
- Verify masking is secure and complete before vehicle enters paint booth.
Step 5 – Priming
- Apply primer as directed.
- Allow proper flash and cure times.
- Block sand primer surfaces as required.
- Re-prime and re-sand when necessary.
Step 6 – Final Preparation
- Perform final cleaning using approved cleaning products.
- Use tack cloth to remove dust and debris.
- Verify vehicle is clean and paint-ready.
- Present vehicle to Paint Technician for final review.
QUALITY CONTROL CHECKLIST
Prior to moving a vehicle to paint, verify:
- Surface is clean and free of contaminants.
- No visible sanding scratches.
- No pinholes, waves, or imperfections.
- Feather-edging is smooth and consistent.
- Masking is complete and secure.
- Vehicle meets shop quality standards.
- Vehicle is on schedule for delivery.
EQUIPMENT AND WORK AREA MAINTENANCE
- Clean and maintain sanding equipment daily.
- Clean spray equipment after each use.
- Disassemble and clean paint-related equipment as directed.
- Keep prep stations clean and organized.
- Assist in maintaining paint booths and paint storage areas.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Respirator
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Protective clothing
- Hearing protection when required
Safety Expectations:
- Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Handle hazardous materials properly.
- Dispose of waste materials according to environmental and company guidelines.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Report unsafe conditions immediately.

- Deliver vehicles that are fully prepared and ready for paint.
- Minimize rework caused by prep-related defects.
- Maintain manufacturer and company refinishing standards.

- Maintain workflow to support production goals.
- Complete assigned tasks within established timelines.
- Communicate delays or issues immediately.
Teamwork
- Work cooperatively with Paint Technicians, Body Technicians, and Production staff.
- Maintain positive communication and professionalism.
- Assist team members as needed to achieve on-time delivery goals.
COMMON DEFECTS TO AVOID
- Sanding scratches
- Poor feather-edging
- Dirt or contamination
- Improper masking
- Missed body imperfections
- Primer shrinkage
- Incomplete cleaning prior to paint
Remember: The final quality of the paint finish is directly related to the quality of the preparation process.
Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
