Summary: Work involves performing a variety of general support tasks and activities in the maintenance of city streets and sidewalks as well as city street signs. Employees work under close supervision receiving specific instructions from a supervisor.
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Performs the full range of ground maintenance; landscapes, mows rakes, edges, and prunes, irrigates, fertilizers, and trims lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs.
2. Operates various hand and power tools including mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, weed whackers, snow blowers, and other ground maintenance equipment.
3. Removes snow from streets and sidewalks by shoveling, snow blowing, or plowing;
4. Cleans City streets, clears litter, rakes leaves and shovels snow;
5. Performs routine painting, street lines, filling potholes, and maintenance street signs.
6. Responsible for reasonable care and maintenance of equipment used.
7. Operates City vehicles and equipment in job-related tasks and performs minor maintenance on equipment. (May assist in operating vehicles as part of daily responsibilities in the event of short-staffing subject to authorization and approval from the Street Supervisor/Public Works Director and HR).
8. Submits daily written reports.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or a G.E.D.
- Ability to drive trucks and operate all equipment, if qualified.
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, preferably a Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). (A plus, not required)
- Ability to learn and operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely, and in conformance with applicable equipment requirements.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication.
- Ability to learn new duties and when standard operations are learned, work without constant direction.
- Ability to work outside for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions and work overtime, if necessary.
- Ability to have physical strength to lift heavy objects.
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
- Must pass a general physical exam and drug screening.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS:
Work requires physical strength, agility, endurance, dexterity, and hand-eye coordination to perform all essential duties including the operation of power mowers, equipment, and tools. Work requires lifting and carrying objects up to 50 pounds and reaching in front of the body and overhead while lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Work requires sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time and frequent kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, and climbing ladders.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is performed primarily outdoors at various parks and City properties. Work exposes employees to hot, cold, and inclement weather, as well as dust, pollen, fumes, and noise. Work requires the use of safety equipment and compliance with safety rules and procedures.
