Duties & Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy-duty collection vehicles and equipment, including powertrains, drivetrains, electrical, steering, braking, exhaust, and suspension systems.
- Repair refuse vehicle and transfer trailer body systems, including hydraulic, electrical, body control, and mechanical systems.
- Maintain and repair processing equipment such as balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors, controls, and related facility equipment.
- Perform fabrication and repair work using welding equipment, torches, tools, and machinery.
- Inspect and test vehicles and equipment, maintain shop parts and supplies, and complete accurate repair records and computer entries.
- Lead daily repair work by assigning, reviewing, and checking the work of other team members.
Requirements
- 4+ years of hands-on mechanical experience as a journeyman mechanic, or an equivalent combination of mechanical training and experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with diesel and/or CNG engines, heavy-duty vehicle systems, mechanical components, and repair procedures.
- Strong troubleshooting experience with hydraulic, electrical, steering, braking, suspension, and related heavy-duty vehicle systems.
- Working knowledge of AC/DC electrical controls, motor systems, and fabrication tools and techniques.
- Experience with DOT Out-of-Service Criteria, CHP .T. inspections, and DOT compliance audits.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class A or B CDL and valid DOT medical certificate within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to use basic computer programs, read service information and work orders, follow safe work practices, and communicate effectively with the team.
- Waste and recycling industry experience.
- Experience maintaining fleet vehicles, landfill equipment, balers, conveyors, hoppers, electric motors, or similar processing equipment.
- High school diploma or GED formal mechanical trade school training is highly desirable.
