Position Summary
The Business Manager oversees the day-to-day operational, administrative, and human resources operations of Blue Hills Ski Area. This is a full-time role during the winter operating season, with part-time hours offered during the off-season to support year-round administrative continuity. The role is responsible for payroll processing and HRIS administration (ADP), benefits and compliance coordination, handbook policy enforcement, accounts payable/receivable, budgeting support, and general office management. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working across finance and HR functions, and able to supervise administrative staff in a seasonal, fast-paced resort environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage bi-weekly payroll processing for year-round and seasonal staff using ADP, including new hire setup, timekeeping review, wage adjustments, and off-cycle corrections.
- Administer HR-related functions including onboarding paperwork, I-9/E-Verify compliance, benefits enrollment, and maintenance of accurate employee records.
- Serve as primary point of contact for ADP system issues, report generation, and coordination with ADP support for troubleshooting.
- Ensure compliance with federal and Massachusetts employment law, including wage and hour rules, PFML contributions, and required workplace postings.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, including vendor payments, invoice coding, and reconciliation.
- Support the President in preparing and excuting various projects
- Assist with the hiring process, including drafting offer letters, coordinating background checks, and maintaining candidate communications.
- Maintain personnel files and employment records in accordance with retention requirements and confidentiality standards.
- Enforce employee handbook policies consistently across departments, addressing violations and escalating disciplinary matters as needed.
- respond to day-to-day employee questions regarding pay, benefits, and policy.
- Partner with department managers (mountain operations, snow sports, race program, food & beverage, rentals, etc.) to support staffing and administrative needs across the resort.
- Assist with unemployment claims, workers' compensation reporting, and other HR-related administrative filings as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Accounting, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 3+ years of experience in a business management, HR generalist, or office management role; experience in a seasonal or hospitality/recreation environment is a plus.
- Demonstrated proficiency with ADP (Workforce Now or similar) for payroll and HR administration is required.
- Working knowledge of Massachusetts wage and hour law, PFML, and general HR compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel / Google and general office/accounting software
- Prior supervisory or team-lead experience preferred; comfortable managing staff schedules and providing direct feedback.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities during a compressed winter operating season.
- High degree of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential employee and financial information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Attributes
- Prior experience managing or mentoring administrative or seasonal staff in a leadership capacity.
- Familiarity with the ski/resort industry or other seasonal operations.
- Comfortable working on-site during peak winter season, including some early mornings, evenings, and weekends as business needs require.
Physical & Work Environment
Primarily an office-based role located on-site at the ski area. Some exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions when moving between buildings. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
