MAINTENANCE WORKER
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the maintenance of airport grounds, buildings, and utility equipment.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs semi-skilled work operating tractors to mow airport grounds and airfield. Other tasks performing routine maintenance and repair tasks on airport equipment and buildings. Work requires some knowledge of tools and trade helper procedures in mechanical and plumbing processes. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operations including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, exposure to chemical fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under direct supervision. Work is evaluated in terms of effectiveness in following procedures, work schedules, and accuracy in completing assignments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operates equipment to mow around airport buildings, utility stations, and runways; trims edges, cleans paper from areas, and removes rocks and other impediments from runways.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, electrical and hydraulic systems, and other apparatus and equipment.
Participates in regular preventative maintenance of tractors and other assigned equipment and other preventative maintenance activities.
Participates in the safety program and adheres to safety procedures and policies of the department.
Cleans floors, restrooms, windows, and performs other custodial duties.
Performs related duties as directed by superior.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Some knowledge of the tools and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the operation of equipment for mowing purposes.
Skill in the use and care of tools.
Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions and make simple written records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and superior.
Ability to read charts, dials, and gauges.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, read measurement devices, and prepare written records.
Graduation from high school and some experience including trades helper or repair work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
