Since 2010, Volunteers in Medicine in Southern Nevada (VMSN) has provided high-quality, comprehensive health care to members of our community who need our help. These individuals are typically low-income earners whose jobs don’t include access to health insurance.
As a nonprofit health organization, VMSN provides care and support at no cost to these individuals who are falling through the cracks of our health system. We are able to do so because of the many caring health care practitioners and other individuals who volunteer their time to help our neighbors in need, and because of the generous financial and in-kind service contributions given each year by businesses, foundations and individuals.
Position Overview
The MEDICAL ASSISTANT provides quality compassionate care to all patients in accordance with the policies and procedures of the VMSN clinic. In addition, as a Medical Assistant you will be responsible for providing administrative support to ensure efficient operation of VMSN. You will support doctors and patients through a variety of tasks related to patient care management, organization, and communication.
Essential Job Functions:
- Welcomes patients and visitors in a friendly and inviting demeanor.
- Oversees the training of all incoming Front Desk volunteers, including Front Desk lead positions and scheduling/check out volunteers.
- Schedules appointments for follow-up and resources including Care Coordination and Ask a Pharmacist; exercises good judgment in the scheduling of escalated cases from the Medical staff.
- Answers or refers inquiries from patients and volunteers, in person or by telephone.
- In a supervisory role of volunteer staff, ensures patient appointments are on schedule by notifying the Back desk of patient's arrival and ensures correct check-in process.
- Maintains Front office inventory and equipment by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipates needed supplies, expedites orders for supplies to supervisory personnel and verifies receipt of supplies.
- Maintains operations by following policies and procedures, and reports needed changes to supervisory personnel.
- In collaboration with supervisory personnel, edits Front Desk policies and procedures that reflect the growth and changes of the organization.
- In collaboration with the Volunteer Department, manages and updates the Front Desk training manual.
- Oversees a rotating volunteer staff; ability to effectively manage a volunteer base of varying backgrounds, age levels, education and experience.
- Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information.
- Manages and schedules in-house referral waiting list of VMSN specialty providers and resources.
- Helps manage patient interest list for VMSN classes/resources including but not limited to Latinos Saludables, Coping with Chronic Illness, etc.
- Comforts patients by anticipating patients' anxieties, answering patients' questions and maintaining the reception area.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish required; assists in translating in Spanish when needed for patients either by walk-in or by phone.
Required Qualifications:
1. Medical Assistant Certification
2. Bilingual in English and Spanish; Written and Spoken.
3. Minimum (2) years of experience working in a medical facility/clinic reception desk.
4. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
5. Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
6. Strong organizational skills; ability to manage priorities with high volume of detailed work..
7. Passion for improving the Las Vegas community through non-profit work.
8. Sensitivity to the needs of diverse, low-income and ethnic populations.
9. Positive and motivated self-starter.
10. Working knowledge of computers including Windows and Microsoft Office.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.50 per hour
