About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Controls & Automation Engineer to join an established industrial organization and serve as a key technical resource for automation, controls, and large-scale equipment projects.
This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys both PLC programming and troubleshooting as well as taking ownership of automation projects from concept through commissioning. The ideal candidate will have strong Allen-Bradley PLC experience, a background working with conveyor or automated material-handling systems, and the ability to work directly with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to bring projects to completion.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer who wants to take on greater ownership of automation projects while remaining technically hands-on.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead and point person for larger automation and controls projects.
- Work with outside vendors and contractors to define project scope, specifications, equipment requirements, and deliverables.
- Coordinate internal resources and support project execution from design through installation and commissioning.
- Develop and program PLC control systems from the ground up.
- Program and troubleshoot automated conveyor and material-handling systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC systems.
- Troubleshoot controls issues including PLC inputs and outputs, signals, sequencing, timers, thermal overloads, stop circuits, and related automation components.
- Identify and resolve system issues while working collaboratively with vendors and internal teams.
- Support the integration of equipment and standalone components into centralized control systems.
- Maintain and improve HMI and operator control systems.
- Troubleshoot and optimize PLCs, drives, instrumentation, and industrial networks.
- Support system commissioning and startup activities.
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to improve equipment reliability and system performance.
- Maintain technical documentation and ensure projects and systems meet applicable safety and quality standards.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in industrial controls, automation, or a related engineering environment.
- Strong experience programming Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs.
- Demonstrated ability to develop PLC programs from the ground up.
- Hands-on experience with conveyor systems, automated equipment, or material-handling systems.
- Strong electrical controls and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Experience troubleshooting PLC inputs/outputs, sequencing, signals, and automation components.
- Experience working with vendors, contractors, or systems integrators on automation projects.
- Ability to lead or manage automation projects from scope development through commissioning.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work in a hands-on industrial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with PowerFlex drives.
- Experience with HMI platforms such as PanelView, Wonderware, or Ignition.
- Experience with SCADA systems and industrial networking.
- Experience with industrial safety systems.
- Experience commissioning new automation equipment and systems.
- Formal project management experience.
Schedule & Compensation
- $125,000+ base salary
- 10% annual bonus opportunity
- Typical schedule: 7:00 AM–4:00/4:30 PM
- Approximately 45–50 hours per week, depending on project needs
- Occasional weekend work, generally every couple of months
- Flexibility to adjust the schedule following weekend project support
- Salaried position; overtime is not provided
Pay: $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
