Overview
The Animal Caregiver duties include but are not limited to: cleaning the kennels, crates, and stainless banks daily, ensuring that animals get sufficient exercise, ensuring the animals have sufficient food and water. Some animals have specific health needs and require the administration of medications. Caregiver will log /share information on the animal’s behavior (temperament, food habits etc) to assist with future placement in foster or a permanent home. Laundry and cleaning of the SPCA facility animal common areas, supply areas, and play yards are also duties of the Animal Caregiver.
Key Responsibilities
1. Feed and water each animal as prescribed by the DVM.
2. Make sure animals are clean including bathing and brushing.
3. Recognize and record any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any SPCA ETX animal.
4. Following medication calendars, administer medications as directed by Vet/Vet Tech. Documenting on calendar with initials.
5. Clean and sanitize all kennels, runs and related areas.
6. Walk and exercise animals daily.
7. Wash, dry, fold, and put away laundry.
8. Empty trash within building.
9. Light grounds maintenance (picking up trash and feces)
10. Restock blankets, cleaning supplies, food.
11. Maintaining clear, legible and accurate paperwork.
Qualifications
- Previous shelter/animal care experience preferred
- Knowledge of proper methods of animal restraint.
- Ability to follow through task and work independently.
- A thorough understanding of medical conditions (infectious and viral) that are commonly found in shelter /rescue populations and the potential risks they pose to humans and owned animals.
- Proper understanding of cleaning and sanitation practices required to prevent the spread of infectious disease within the environment.
- Education: Must be at least 18 years old. High School degree or equivalent,
- Must possess valid Texas driver’s license.
- Must exercise good judgment and maintain calm and clear thinking under stressful and difficult situations.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Physical Effort
a. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds for 100 feet.
b. Bending, reaching, squatting, stooping.
c. Control large dogs on a leash.
d. Work in an environment with daily changes in climate.
e. Walking and/or standing for long periods.
6. Working Conditions
a. Work is normally performed inside and outside.
b. Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises.
c. Exposure to bites, scratches and animal waste.
d. Possible exposure to contagious diseases.
Pay: $11.00 - $13.00 per hour
