Position Summary

As a High School Tutor, you'll provide the academic support, encouragement, and individualized instruction that helps students build confidence, master challenging concepts, and achieve success in Math, Science, or English Language Arts. Whether you're a current classroom teacher looking to extend your impact beyond the school day or a retired educator who still enjoys helping students succeed, this is an opportunity to continue doing what you do best in a supportive after school environment. Working on an LAUSD high school campus, you'll provide targeted academic support in small groups, helping students strengthen their understanding, complete coursework, and build the confidence they need to reach their goals. This is a grant funded, seasonal position supporting high school students during the academic year.
How You'll Make an Impact

Provide engaging, subject specific tutoring in Math, Science, or English Language Arts that helps students strengthen academic skills and achieve greater success in the classroom.
- Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, overcome challenges, and build confidence.
- Inspire students to stay motivated, develop positive study habits, and reach their academic goals through individualized instruction and encouragement.
- Collaborate with YMCA Team Members to identify student needs, monitor progress, and celebrate academic growth.
- Foster meaningful relationships with students while creating a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment that reflects the YMCA's commitment to youth development.
Schedule
This is a part-time, seasonal position that follows the school calendar and is offered during the academic year on school days only. Tutors typically work 1 to 2 days per week, providing approximately 4 hours of after school tutoring each week on an LAUSD high school campus. Additional opportunities may be available to participate in staff meetings, trainings, or student engagement activities throughout the school year.

Minimum Qualifications

Twenty one (21) years of age or older.
- Valid California Teaching Credential.
- Current, former, or retired high school teachers are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Experience working with teens in an educational, classroom, or tutoring environment.
- Subject matter expertise in high school Math, Science, or English Language Arts.
- Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to create a welcoming, supportive, and academically focused environment.
- Current EMSA First Aid and Adult, Infant, and Child CPR certifications, or the ability to obtain required certifications as a condition of employment.
- Completion of required health screenings and background clearances prior to working with participants.
