Job Summary:
The peer support specialist will be a motivated, self-guided individual with lived experience of mental health challenges who uses that experience to support others in recovery. They will be willing to share their personal challenges and successes to help others on their own personal journey to wellness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Build trusting, supportive relationships with clients

Offer one-on-one or group peer support sessions

Help clients set and achieve personal recovery goals

Support development of coping strategies and life skills

Encourage wellness practices and resilience

Empower clients to speak up for their needs and preferences

Promote person-centered and recovery-oriented care

Work alongside other behavioral health care team members collaboratively

Maintain accurate, timely records of interactions

Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation to accompany patients to various appointments.
Education and Experience
-
Lived personal experience with mental health (adult peer or youth peer) or through having a family member who is receiving or has received services and supports related to the diagnosis of a behavioral health condition (family peer) and is willing to self-identify on this basis with members receiving services.

High school diploma or GED (some college coursework preferred)

Adult- Completion of a state-approved Peer Support Specialist training program preferred. If not certified, willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire and maintain certification.

Family- must successfully complete and continuously maintain certification as a Family Support Specialist through a Department-approved curriculum within 6 months of hire.

Youth- must be between 18 and 30 years old, receiving or has received services and support related to the diagnosis of behavioral health condition, is in recovery from that condition, and who is willing to self-identify on this basis with members. Youth Peer must successfully complete and continuously maintain certification as a Youth Support Specialist for BHH Services through a Department-approved curriculum within 6 months of hire.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

Comp Range:
$18.62 - $25.64
