Job Summary
The Saw Operator is responsible for operating various types of saws—including band saws, circular saws, and panel saws—to cut raw materials such as metal, plastic, or wood to precise dimensions and tolerances. This role requires the ability to read work orders, measure materials accurately, set up and adjust equipment, and ensure all cuts meet quality standards.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, follows safety protocols consistently, and works independently while maintaining a clean and organized work area. Routine equipment maintenance and quality inspections are essential components of this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Sets up and operates power saws (wet, band, or circular) to cut materials to required lengths or contours per specifications.
- Installs appropriate saw blades based on material type; sets stop gauges, saw speeds, and indexing mechanisms for accurate positioning.
- Complies with all company policies, including Health, Safety, and Quality Assurance standards.
- Reports injuries, accidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately to a supervisor or manager.
- Reviews Work Orders, Drawings, and ITP specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
- Verifies conformance of finished parts to specifications using required measuring instruments.
- Monitors products for defects and reports non-conformances to supervision and Quality Control.
- Performs basic preventative maintenance at the workstation as required.
- Maintains equipment and keeps the work area clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Reads and follows work orders accurately.
- Uses measuring tools to ensure accuracy and consistency in all cuts.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience setting up and operating power saws (wet, band, or circular) to cut materials per specifications.
- Ability to install saw blades, set stop gauges, adjust saw speeds, and operate indexing mechanisms.
- Experience reviewing Work Orders, Drawings, and ITP specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
- Knowledge of machine operation, setup procedures, material identification, and measurement techniques.
- Ability to read and follow Work Orders accurately.
- Proficiency using measuring instruments such as calipers, tape measures, and gauges.
- Basic math skills for production calculations.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials ranging from 20–50 lbs, occasionally heavier with assistance.
- Exposure to moderate to high noise levels.
- Ability to work in environments that may be hot, cold, or dusty depending on materials being cut.
