POSITION SUMMARY
Provides support services to the laboratory technical staff and nursing. Acts as a laboratory information resource to health center staff and clients. Processes specimens for testing. Provides appropriate and timely acquisition of patient specimens by capillary and venipuncture. Performs a variety of clerical tasks related to specimen processing and patient billing. Reports directly to the Laboratory Manager or designee.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Procures specimens appropriate for the requirements of ordered tests.
- Maintains a system providing proper patient preparation and proper specimen collection, identification, preservation, transportation, and processing.
- Understands hospital infection control policies and antiseptic collection procedures.
- Enters patient information and test results into laboratory information system.
- Processes specimens for routine and STAT work using the laboratory information system.
- Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
- Provides phlebotomy services whenever required, including on-call as needed. Responds to internal or external disasters as needed.
- Conducts work in such a manner as to be organized and meet established deadlines.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results. Responsible for age specific knowledge.
- Is clear and concise, both verbally and in writing when communicating with staff and the public. Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers. Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
