Sumter County is Currently Seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator II
Starting Wage: $33,000 (Based on Experience)
Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator II operates a wide range of heavy equipment to support the maintenance of County roads, drainage systems, and right-of-ways. This position serves as a lead operator, providing guidance to team members while ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. The role also includes equipment transport, minor repairs, and emergency response support. Reports to the Assistant Public Works Director.
Examples of Work Performed
- Operate heavy equipment including motor graders, bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, and related machinery
- Perform road maintenance activities such as grading, asphalt repair, right-of-way clearing, and vegetation control
- Maintain drainage systems including ditches, storm drains, and culverts
- Transport heavy equipment between job sites
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, and two-way radios to complete tasks
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment
- Complete and submit equipment maintenance and service reports
- Assist with installation and maintenance of roadway signage
- Direct traffic around work zones as needed
- Serve as lead operator and provide guidance or support to equipment operators and crew members
- Ensure safety procedures are followed by all crew members on-site
- Respond to emergency situations and remain on call as required
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of road maintenance, construction, and public works operations
- Strong skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment safely and efficiently
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards related to equipment operation
- Ability to perform minor equipment repairs and preventative maintenance
- Ability to lead, support, and train team members as needed
- Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures and work standards
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Strong communication skills with ability to interact professionally with coworkers and the public
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate work activities efficiently
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- One to two years of experience in heavy equipment operation, road maintenance, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid South Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Ability to serve in a lead role and assist in supervising crew activities
- Ability to be on call 24/7 for emergency response
- Ability to successfully pass background check and drug screening
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Requires physical activity including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operating heavy equipment
- Exposure to noise, dust, debris, and potentially hazardous conditions
- May require lifting up to 100 pounds
- Subject to emergency call-outs, including nights, weekends, and holidays
