TVI Job Description
The teacher for students with visual impairments provides direct, consult, indirect, and assessment-based services They are also responsible for identifying materials and accommodations to address the visual impairment. These services are focused on mitigating the effects of the visual impairment in education and community settings, as outlined by the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). Services for infants may be provided in the infants’ homes or child-care settings (within district boundaries). Students will range in age from birth through 21, and may or may not have complex access needs.
TVI Roles and Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility is to fulfill all direct and consultative TVI services as specified by the student’s IEP, including determining and delivering service times, determining and organizing material preparation as needed, determining and delivering consult time, and outlining supplementary aids and services as needed
- Assessing students for eligibility for vision services using a thorough FVA/LMA that also addresses ECC and AT needs, as well as providing recommendations on services and materials required in order to provide FAPE.
- Scheduling all students on assigned caseload and maintaining an accurate, up-to-date calendar
- Creating, amending, and/or collaborating on IEP goals to fulfill services within the role of the TVI
- Preparing sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs, IEP goals and objectives, functioning, and motivational levels.
- Writing service logs accurately and efficiently by the end of each day and ready for review by the end of each work week.
- Educating students, parents, special and general education personnel, service providers, and school administration in:
- understanding the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of visually impaired students (i.e. Expanded Core Curriculum skill areas)
- services and support available from local programs for visually impaired students,
- acquiring information regarding local, state, and national resources for the education of visually impaired students, and
- understanding specific eye conditions, the educational implications of various visual impairments, assistive technology, low vision tools, and the results of functional vision and learning media assessments.
- Providing recommendations to the site administrator, teachers, and parents in making environmental adjustments for the student in the school and home.
- Ensuring materials are produced and provided in accordance with FAPE.
- Providing instruction in the development and maintenance of skills related to the Core Curriculum and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), as indicated in the IEP.
- Creating progress reports according to district deadlines or as stated within the IEP goal.
- Attending IEP and planning meetings for assigned students.
- Providing other services and assessments as directed.
- Providing recommendations on assistive technology necessary for FAPE as well as training on those AT devices as needed to both student and educational team.
TVI Qualifications:
- Educational Specialist Instruction - VI Credential from the CTC.
- Comfortable working with students with moderate to severe disabilities, students that have been identified as gifted, students that have behaviors that impede their ability to learn, and students ages 0-22
- Comfortable working with students with ocular and/or neurological visual impairments.
- Demonstrates ability to exercise good judgment, cooperation, tact, and discretion in dealing with the student, family, district, and others.
- Works well in team environments
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Follows established policies and procedures, and designated lines of communication and authority.
- Ability to be punctual and reliable.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to advocate effectively for the needs of a student with visual impairments in a variety of settings
- Able to work effectively in hybrid environments
- Able to navigate and utilize the Google Workspace efficiently
Pay: $40.00 - $45.00 per hour
Experience:
- Teacher of the Visually Impaired: 1 year (Required)
- Special education: 1 year (Required)
License/Certification:
- Education Specialist Credential in Visual Impairment (VI) (Required)
- California Teaching License (Required)
