Position Summary
The Field Service Technician – Machinery Installation is a highly skilled, road-ready professional responsible for the hands-on installation, startup, commissioning, and technical support of CAPE's industrial machinery at customer facilities across the US and Canada. This is a travel-intensive role — expect to be on the road up to 75% of the time — and it is ideal for a technically strong individual who enjoys variety, independence, and the satisfaction of seeing a machine run right the first time at a new customer site.
When not traveling, you will be based at CAPE North America’s Duncan, SC facility, participating in factory acceptance testing, pre-shipment checks, and continuous improvement activities. All travel expenses are fully covered by the company, including airfare, hotel, rental car, and a daily per diem.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Commissioning:
- Travel to customer facilities throughout the US and Canada to execute machinery installations from site arrival through final sign-off
- Unpack, position, level, anchor, and align machinery in accordance with engineering drawings and installation specifications
- Connect electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems per wiring diagrams and schematics
- Perform complete machine commissioning including startup, calibration, parameter configuration, and performance verification
- Conduct factory acceptance testing (FAT) at CAPE North America's Duncan facility prior to shipment
- Document all installation activities, settings, and as-built conditions using standardized commissioning checklists
Technical Troubleshooting & Support:
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and controls-related issues encountered during installation or startup
- Provide on-site technical support and warranty service for recently installed equipment
- Work remotely with CAPE North America's engineering team to escalate and resolve complex technical issues
- Support customers via phone, video call, and remote diagnostic tools when on-site visits are not required
- Complete detailed field service reports for every site visit, capturing work performed, parts used, and open items
Customer Training & Relationship Management:
- Train customer operators and maintenance personnel on safe and correct machine operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting basics
- Deliver professional, clear communication with customer site contacts throughout each engagement
- Represent CAPE North America with the highest standards of professionalism — you are the face of our company at every customer site
- Gather and relay customer feedback, punch list items, and improvement suggestions to the engineering and sales teams
Shop & Home-Base Activities:
- Assist with machine assembly, wiring, and pre-shipment inspection at the Duncan, SC facility when not traveling
- Help develop and refine installation procedures, commissioning checklists, and field service documentation
- Maintain and organize field service tools, test equipment, and spare parts kits
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts based on field experience and customer feedback
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in field service, machinery installation, or industrial equipment commissioning
- Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Experience with hand tools, power tools, precision alignment tools, and basic test equipment (multimeter, etc.)
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% of the time, including overnight and extended stays (sometimes 2–3 weeks)
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Valid US passport or ability to obtain one — travel to Canada is required
- Strong communication skills and customer-facing professionalism
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage time independently on remote job sites
Preferred:
- Experience with PLC-controlled machinery (Schneider and Omron strongly preferred)
- Background in CNC machinery, automated assembly equipment, or custom industrial machinery
- Associate degree or vocational/technical certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Technology
- Experience working with millwrights, electricians, or rigging crews during heavy machinery installation
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Forklift or aerial lift certification
- Bilingual in English and Spanish — a strong plus for sites with Spanish-speaking workforces
Travel & Compensation Details
We know that a traveling role is a lifestyle commitment, and we have structured this position to reward and respect that:
- Pay: $28.00 – $40.00 per hour based on experience, with overtime paid on all hours over 40 per week
- All travel expenses fully covered: airfare, hotel, ground transportation, and rental car
- Daily per diem provided for meals and incidentals on all travel days
- Company credit card issued for all business travel expenses — no out-of-pocket and wait-for-reimbursement
- Overtime opportunities are common on installation projects
- Home-base schedule when not traveling: standard Monday–Friday daytime hours at our Duncan, SC facility

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
This role involves significant physical activity including lifting up to 75 lbs, working in crouched or confined positions, climbing ladders and platforms, and operating in a variety of industrial environments (automotive plants, food processing facilities, warehouses, and more). Candidates must be comfortable with heights, loud environments, and varying climate conditions at customer sites. All required PPE is provided or reimbursed.
