Overview
Join our team as a Site Supervisor for Retail Construction, where your leadership will drive the successful delivery of retail and mall renovation projects across the Chicago area and beyond. In this role, you will oversee daily construction activities on-site, manage subcontractor crews, and serve as the primary point of coordination with store and mall staff throughout construction. This role requires regular travel — expect to be on the road for out-of-town projects roughly half the time, with the other half spent supervising jobs in and around Chicago. Many projects run overnight, since retail and mall work is often scheduled outside normal business hours to avoid disrupting store operations, so overnight and off-hours shifts should be expected as a regular part of this role. This position offers the opportunity to lead projects from start to finish while keeping sites safe, on schedule, and on budget.
Responsibilities
- Oversee subcontractor crews on active retail renovation sites, ensuring all work meets company quality standards and project specifications.
- Set clear quality expectations with subcontractors before and throughout each phase of work.
- Conduct regular site walkthroughs to inspect workmanship and catch issues before they become costly rework.
- Address and resolve on-site quality or performance issues directly with subcontractors, escalating as needed.
- Provide regular progress reports to ownership and operations management on project status, timeline, and open issues.
- Document site conditions and daily progress with photos and written updates.
- Track and report change orders as they arise on site.
- Maintain accurate records of subcontractor attendance, work completed, and milestones reached.
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for store staff, mall management, and property representatives during renovation work.
- Coordinate construction schedules and site access with store/mall operations to minimize disruption to business activities.
- Communicate progress updates to store and mall stakeholders on a regular cadence.
- Ensure compliance with mall/property rules regarding construction hours, common-area access, noise, and safety protocols.
- Monitor project timelines and coordinate subcontractor scheduling to keep renovations on track.
- Flag delays, resource needs, or scope issues to ownership promptly.
- Ensure job sites are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized condition throughout the renovation.
- Travel to out-of-town retail/mall project locations as needed, including overnight stays, for approximately half of all assignments.
Qualifications
- Proven experience supervising retail construction, general contracting, or a related field.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple subcontractor trades on site.
- Excellent communication skills for coordinating with store/mall staff and reporting to ownership.
- Comfortable conducting quality inspections and holding subcontractors accountable to standards.
- Strong organizational skills; experience with job tracking/reporting tools a plus (e.g., CompanyCam, Contractor Foreman).
- Willingness and ability to travel to out-of-town project sites approximately half the time, including overnight stays.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
