Job Summary
We are hiring Traveling Fiber Technicians to support fiber optic, structured cabling, and data center infrastructure projects nationwide. Technicians will install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain fiber and cabling infrastructure, with level determined by experience and technical proficiency. Candidates must have at least 1 year of relevant experience and be comfortable with extensive travel, extended workweeks, and physically demanding indoor and outdoor environments.
Job Responsibilities
- Install and rough-in fiber optic and structured cabling infrastructure.
- Route, dress, secure, manage, and label fiber and copper cabling.
- Install and terminate single-mode and multimode fiber.
- Terminate LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, SC-APC, and other applicable fiber connector types based on experience and project requirements.
- Perform fusion and mechanical fiber splicing when qualified.
- Perform OTDR and Fluke DTX/DSX testing to certify links, troubleshoot faults, and validate system performance.
- Interpret fiber test results and assist with or independently troubleshoot end-to-end connectivity issues based on experience level.
- Calculate and validate single-mode and multimode fiber loss budgets when required.
- Terminate CAT3/CAT5 copper cabling, punch 110/66 blocks, and perform continuity testing.
- Identify and troubleshoot opens, shorts, transposed pairs, fiber faults, and other cabling issues.
- Install fiber trays, ladder racks, cable management systems, power trays, cabinets, patch panels, and related infrastructure.
- Complete telecom closet buildouts, including racks, backboards, patch panels, grounding, hardware, and labeling.
- Perform rack-and-stack installation of equipment.
- Build server racks and complete rack elevations according to project specifications.
- Support Outside Plant (OSP) installations, including routing fiber into data center facilities.
- Read and follow blueprints, infrastructure drawings, rack elevations, and installation specifications.
- Receive, organize, stage, and assemble project materials and hardware.
- Maintain accurate timesheets, work orders, test results, labeling records, job logs, and other required field documentation.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, project teams, customers, and other onsite personnel.
- Follow established safety procedures, including proper PPE, jobsite housekeeping, equipment safety, and OSHA requirements.
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of hands-on fiber optic, structured cabling, telecommunications, or data center cabling experience required for Technician I.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on fiber optic and data center experience required for Technician II.
- Experience installing, routing, dressing, securing, labeling, and terminating fiber optic cabling.
- Experience working with single-mode and multimode fiber.
- Knowledge of common fiber connector types, including LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP, and similar connectors.
- Technician II candidates must demonstrate advanced fiber termination skills across multiple connector types.
- Fusion and mechanical splicing experience preferred for Technician I and proficiency required for Technician II.
- Experience with OTDR and Fluke DTX/DSX or comparable testing equipment.
- Technician II candidates must be able to certify fiber links, interpret OTDR traces, troubleshoot end-to-end issues, and validate system performance.
- Knowledge of copper termination, including CAT3/CAT5, 110/66 blocks, patch panels, and continuity testing.
- Experience troubleshooting fiber and copper cabling faults.
- Experience with telecom closet and data center infrastructure installations.
- Knowledge of fiber loss budgets and applicable TIA/EIA standards; Technician II candidates should be able to calculate and validate single-mode and multimode loss budgets.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, installation drawings, rack elevations, and project specifications.
- Ability to accurately complete field documentation, test results, work orders, labeling records, and timesheets.
- Hyperscale or large-scale data center experience preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Active OSHA 10 certification preferred.
- Ability to use basic hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel-lock pliers, punch-down tool, flashlight, and tool pouch.
- Must have appropriate work boots, including steel-toe or composite-toe footwear, gloves, and required PPE.
- Ability to safely work from ladders and scissor lifts, at heights, in ceilings, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move materials or equipment weighing up to 75 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform hands-on work throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in very hot outdoor conditions when required.
- Ability and willingness to travel full time to project sites.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)
- Full-time nationwide travel is required.
- Typical project rotation consists of approximately four weeks onsite followed by a long weekend at home.
- Home weekends are typically Friday through Sunday, with technicians expected to return to the project site by Monday.
- Typical shift start time is 7:00 a.m.
- Typical work schedule is approximately 50-60 hours per week.
- Extended shifts and overtime may be required based on project needs.
- Work may be performed in data centers, telecommunications spaces, construction environments, ceilings, elevated work areas, and outdoor locations.
- Candidates must be prepared to work in very hot outdoor conditions.
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
