Position: Resident Advocate (full-time, temporary 6-12 weeks with possibility of other opportunities)
Program: HomeStart (shelter for women and families)
Reports to: President and CEO
Status: Full-time - 4pm-12am Monday-Friday (temporary assignment for 6-12 weeks with possibility for continued employment)
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
Seeking energetic, reliable team member for Resident Advocate position at IFC’s shelter for women and families in Chapel Hill to fill in for 6-12 weeks while a staff member is on leave of absence. Successful completion may lead to other opportunities on the team.
Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities can be demanding and include: empowering and assisting residents, managing crisis situations, coaching residents on community living expectations, conflict resolution, maintaining safe and clean environment (e.g. monitoring daily chores and pitching in as needed), planning & preparing meals safely, processing donations, record- keeping
Qualifications:
- Prefer candidates with experience working in congregate living facilities, social work or lived experience of homelessness
- Must be reliable and trustworthy as this is a key role and works closely with people who have a variety of experiences
- Must be responsible and organized with good people skills, communication, and computer skills
- Ability and desire to work with people of different backgrounds and personality types
- Must understand root causes of homelessness and poverty
- Candidates with valid drivers’ license and good driving record will be prioritized
- Experience cooking for groups of people with knowledge of kitchen safety procedures
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including verbal, written and computer communication skills
Work Environment:
- Position works in shelter and is responsible for all activities on the shift as well as the health and safety of the facility
- Position is considered Essential Staff in emergencies and during inclement weather
- May be required to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds
- Must be able to respond immediately to crises that arise
- Must be able to work in a hectic, high-demand environment with occasional conflicts and crises
