JOB TITLE: Executive Director, United Way of the Brown County Area
TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: United Way of the Brown County Area Board of Directors
JOB SUMMARY:
Oversee the implementation of all facets of the work of the United Way of the Brown County Area. This work includes, but is not limited to: annual campaign; program partnerships; grant writing and reporting; relationships with partner organizations; public relations; general operating; facilitation of the work of the United Way committees; research and collaborate with community leaders to develop and maintain strategic planning and community impact areas for grants and United Way programs; oversee, maintain, and update grant protocols and systems as needed; oversee and facilitate hosted fiscal grants; supervision of employees, volunteers, and interns; development and oversight of United Way programming.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
a. Coordinate with the campaign committee to direct the activities of the campaign
b. Coordinate with the campaign coordinators for each internal campaign to provide the resources – including campaign literature, forms, speakers, etc. – they need to conduct successful campaigns
c. Coordinate media coverage, including newspaper, radio and internet
d. Ensure that donors understand the United Way’s appreciation of their support of the United Way
a. Recruit businesses that do not participate in Campaign to create a Program Partnership
b. Work with businesses each year to develop a working partnership plan the supports one of the United Way’s In-house programs and offers volunteer, advertising, and donation options that best fit with the business and what the United Way’s program needs are
c. Ensure that all parts of the partnership agreement are upheld each year
- Relationships with partner organizations
a. Coordinate the work of the Community Investment committee
b. Disseminate United Way funding applications to all partner organizations and facilitate their successful completion of required documents
c. Provide technical assistance as needed in non-profit best practices, including assistance in finding funding streams, meeting governmental requirements, etc.
a. Be “ the face” of the United Way through participation in community associations and speaking to community groups
b. Act as liaison to the public for people who have concerns or questions about the work of the United Way
c. Work to keep the United Way and the work that it is doing in the public eye with accurate and timely dissemination of information
d. Maintain and host our Living United radio and cable access show
e. Sit on other community boards and committees such as New Ulm Area Foundation, New Ulm Chamber Willkommen Committee, Rotary, New Ulm Community Education, Brown County Mental Health and Wellness committee, National Night Out committee, Optimist Club, and others as needed or requested by the United Way Board of Directors.
- Community Impact and strategic Planning
a. Work with community leaders, businesses, civic groups, and other community groups to research and develop plans to address the greatest needs in Brown County
b. Develop, maintain, and facilitate the United Ways strategic plan with the Board of Directors
a. Ensure that policies are implemented to ensure fiscal accountability, public transparency, strong donor relations and the use of best practices in non-profit organizations
b. Facilitate monthly Executive and full Board meetings
c. Ensure that complete and accurate information reaches the appropriate decision makers in a timely manner and that decisions are appropriately documented.
- Facilitate the work of the committees
a. Assist in scheduling committee meetings and preparing documents for meetings as requested by the committee chair
b. Assist in the completion of committee projects
c. Prepare monthly reports and yearly committee assignments
- Supervise employees, volunteers, and interns
a. Understand the essential functions of each employee’s/intern’s job and ensure that these functions are being accomplished efficiently and effectively.
b. Facilitate employee’s/interns’ abilities to complete their job requirements by pulling in outside resources when necessary and working with them to find useful, appropriate training
c. Initiate appropriate corrective actions when necessary
- Oversee United Way Programing
a. Oversee United Way-specific project, such as the backpack project, the Day of Caring, Imagination Library, Tax Program, Youth Activities Scholarship, etc.
b. Work to control costs and find alternate methods of funding portions of projects
- Oversee, maintain, and update Community Investment and other grant protocols and systems
a. Organize community representatives to form annual Community Investment grant committees
b. Oversee and maintain online grant applications, impact reports, and evaluations
c. Communicate grant deadlines, expectations, and outcomes to grantees, committee members and board of directors.
a. Maintain awareness of best practices through communication with other United Ways and Untied Way Worldwide, fundraising publications, non-profit leadership materials, trainings, seminars, etc.
b. Work with the Board to create an overall strategy, and work to adhere to that strategy
c. Work with the Board to evaluate current practices and programming and determine how closely these practices and programs align with the United Way mission
QUALIFICATIONS AND PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Fundraising experience
- Grant writing experience
- Experience in managing budgets, strategic planning, and grants management
- Leadership and organizational development experience
- Planned Giving, endowment, and investment planning experience
- Graphic Digital and Social Media Design experience
- Significant experience working with diverse stakeholders within the community
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQURED:
- Strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
- Ability to supervise and motivate employees
- Experience with diverse groups of stakeholders within the community
- Knowledge of youth programming and the prevention field
- Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member and team leader
TRAVEL:
- There is significant travel within the Brown County area, within the State, and occasional travel nationwide. Valid driver’s license, car insurance and vehicle required.
- A mileage allowance consistent with the current IRS mileage allowance will be given for work related travel outside the City of New Ulm
WORK HOURS:
- This position is a full-time, salaried position.
- Work hours may require late afternoon, early morning and evening meeting times and appointments.
Pay: $50,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
