Reporting to the Chief Technologist - Radiology and under the direction of the interpreting physician, performs general radiology examinations on patients for use by physicians in the diagnosing and treating of patient illness and/or injury. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Performs general radiology exams on patients 75%

Prepares exam room and equipment to conduct general radiology examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures

Assumes respondibility for the safety of the patient during the radiology examination

Reviews patient medical history, previous imaging, and supporting clinical information
-
Ensures that the radiology examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of “medical necessity”

Evaluates any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
-
Communicates with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand

Use proper patient positions tools, devices, and equipment adjustment to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition

Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the radiology examination ordered by the physician in accordance with professional and facility imaging guidelines and protocols

Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform general radiology procedures

Apply independent judgment during the examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images

Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis question to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional

Identify and document any limitations to the examination

Review examination images and submit to PACS for the interpreting physician

Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g. HIPAA) and facility policies and procedures

Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards

Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Radiologic Technologist

Maintains appropriate supply par levels in examination rooms

Staffing and Supply Procurement 5%

Established and maintains staffing schedule for general radiology

Responsible for ordering and maintaining adequate supply levels for general radiology

Reports issues/concerns relating to: staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers to Radiology Director, Radiology Manager, or Chief Technologist – Radiology

Recommends action in personnel matters for general radiology staff

Assists personnel in other departments as needed

Performs duties as supervisory technologist as needed

Equipment Use and Maintenance 5%

Maintain cleanliness of the equipment and room

Contacts BioMedical Engineering immediately upon finding the imaging equipment is not operating at optimal levels

Documentation and Reporting 5%

Documents any incidental findings that may impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician

Operates the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)

Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility database records and logs

Quality Assessment / Quality Improvement 5%

Works with the appropriate staff to ensure quality patient care

Carries out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the facility

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The technologist must have the ability to talk with patients and communicate with other departments of the hospital, maintain good working relationships, and to understand and carry out instructions.
The technologist must be able to take call, work weekends, and/or late shifts as needed.
The assessment, care and treatment provided by the technologist will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The technologist is competent to care for patient age groups including the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient.
Employee must, on a continuous basis, have the ability to talk with patients and communicate with other departments of the hospital, and the ability to maintain good working relationships and to understand and carry out instructions. Employee must frequently position and transfer patients. Employee occasionally assists physician in administering opaque media. Employee occasionally rotates within the department or other departments and by shift as required. Employee must have a continuous knowledge of hospital and Radiology computer systems regarding their function and capabilities.
