How 'bout we skip right ahead to the center of the tootsie-pop? Our small business is located in Fountain Inn. We are biased, but we are pretty sure we are the coolest place to work for, ever. And we really believe that we make the best shutters around (you will see what we mean when you check out our website!). Honestly, the job is not all roses and puppy dogs — there is some good news and there is some bad news.
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first:
1. You won't get rich at this job. The pay is $16/hour. It's pizza money, for sure, but if you're trying to support a household, this is not that job. If salary is the top thing on your mind (vs. experience), we probably aren't the best fit for you, and that's okay, we'd rather be upfront about it now.
2. Most of your days, at least at first, will be sanding composite shutters and assembling aluminum shutters. Assembly is basically adult Legos: you've got the drawing, you've got the parts, you put it together. It's repetitive at times. It's not always glamorous. You will get good at it fast, and then we'll start handing you more.
Now let’s talk about the good stuff:
1. Our shop isn't climate controlled. Bay doors open, air moving, shorts and t-shirts in the summer, hoodies in the winter. Okay, that part's maybe not the greatest, but there's some (truly) great stuff coming...
2. This is a real, hands-on manufacturing job that is flexible and can fit around a class schedule or other prior commitments. We're looking at roughly 20 hours/week, M-F between 8-5, and we'll work with you to build a schedule that works around your priorities.
3. Unlike a big manufacturer where you'd get stuck running one machine for a year, here you'll learn everything. Sanding and assembly first, but as you show us you've got it, you'll move into cutting material, painting, running the CNC, and eventually doing CAD drawings. How fast you move depends entirely on how fast you pick things up. We're not going to hold you back, and we're not going to rush you either.
4. You also won’t be stuck at your station on the shop floor all day, where you never see anyone else. Our team works together across the whole business: shop floor, back office, all of it. You'll even help make our weekly "adopt-a-customer" videos, where we send personalized updates to our customers.
5. You'll get to see and touch every part of how a small manufacturing business actually runs. And you'll be expected to fix what bugs you. We want you learning continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, kanban, kaizen, inventory management — the real stuff, just at a smaller, more hands-on scale than a textbook or a big factory floor. You'll even get chances to lead a meeting and sharpen how you present.
6. Spend 2-4 years with us and you'll walk away with legit generalist manufacturing experience, the kind of transferable skills that make you a stronger candidate anywhere in the industry. Or, honestly, you might just decide to stay. Plenty of our team has.
7. We aren't big on stress. We expect efficiency, but we care more about open communication and getting it right the first time than we do about hovering over your shoulder.
Now, let’s talk about the job requirements:
1. You're pursuing (or interested in) a manufacturing-related path. You don't need a degree in hand. You need the direction.
2. You need to be the type of person who gets joy out of getting things done. Every day you'll bang out a list of stuff. Necessary stuff. Sometimes boring stuff. That's manufacturing.
3. You'll be standing pretty much the whole shift, lifting, bending, and carrying shutters. You need to be able to lift and move 30 lbs and be generally coordinated.
4. You need to be willing to learn everything, not just the parts you like. That's basically the job description — and how fast you move through it is on you.
5. You need to be a person who loves to deliver remarkable experiences to other people. You know, you need to be someone who feels good by making other people feel good. That's true for our customers, and it's true for your teammates too.
6. You need to appreciate quality. We're not looking for someone who races through and gets it half-assed. Slow down, do it right: square cuts, tight joints, smooth sanding, clean paint. When you stand back and look at your work, you should feel good about it.
7. You believe in continuous improvement. You look for what's broken and you fix it — or at least you can't stop thinking about it until you do.
8. We are looking for a good, fun person who gets sh!t done. (Oh, and we occasionally swear at the shop…not much…but sometimes a joke is only funny with an F-bomb.)
In short, your job is to learn everything there is to learn about how a small manufacturing shop actually runs, starting with sanding and assembly and growing from there. Work with real precision. Have fun while you're at it. Our shop is casual, but we expect professionalism and punctuality.
What we don't expect is perfection or existing skills. We'll teach you the trade. We expect intelligence, energy, and a get-it-done attitude.

But if you prefer compensation (and we totally get it…we prefer getting paid as well), this is what we offer: this is a part-time manufacturing job. Pay is $16/hour, roughly 20 hours/week. You'll need to come to our Fountain Inn shop regularly (sorry, not a virtual gig). You must be at least 18 with a valid driver's license.
