GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Director of Community Service and Social Justice will provide support, training, and experiences that empower Marywood students, faculty, staff, and alumni to put Catholic social teaching into practice in ways that fulfill the University's mission. The Director will promote the infusion of the principles of the Catholic social tradition into community-based learning, teaching, research, multi-faceted community service programs, and service/immersion trips; will foster servant leadership, and will collaborate with local, national, and international partners to plan, implement, and evaluate service and social justice programs and experiences that support the University's mission, values, and strategic plan.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Develop and implement multi-faceted community-based learning and social justice programs that facilitate student development, foster curricular and faculty engagement, and contribute to identified community needs (e.g., need = food insecurity, coordinate the work of the Pacer Pantry in collaboration with departments across campus).
2. Engage in intentional community collaborations to establish and strengthen partnerships identified to be directly related to the University's mission and strategic plan. Particular attention should be given to local affiliated programs such Nativity Miguel School, Friends of the Poor and Catherine McAuley Center, St. Joseph's Center, and Our Lady of Peace Residence.
3. Coordinate national and international alternative break service/immersion programs that encourage students to be active participants in working toward the common good in our contemporary world.
4. Identify and oversee the activities of the Mother Theresa Maxis IHM Center to affirm the inherent dignity of every person by promoting just relationships within the human family and with all creation.
5. Promote student learning and development through informed community engagement and social justice opportunities to develop conscientious and progressive servant leadership skills.
6. Work collaboratively across campus with offices and departments within Mission Services, the Student Experience, and Academic Affairs.
7. Facilitate programs that encourage students to reflect on issues of social justice and Catholic social tradition.
8. Identify unique interests and needs of individuals and groups to support service experiences in academic courses, student residences, athletic teams, student clubs and organizations as well as employee service initiatives.
9. Perform administrative duties, related to logistical planning and support for service trips, maintain grant records as appropriate (i.e., Pacer Pantry), and conduct assessments for service and social justice programs.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of community-based learning history, theory, and practice
- An understanding of the higher-education environment
- Ability to support the mission and core values of Marywood University
- Ability to work successfully with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
- Good organizational, computer, and social media skills
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in higher education, pastoral ministry, human services, or related area
- 3-5 years experience in higher education
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in higher education, pastoral ministry, human services, or related area.
- Experience working with community agencies for volunteer and community-based learning programs
- Demonstrated knowledge of student leadership development theory and practice
- Knowledge of social media platforms and best practices
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Comfortable driving 7-to 12-passanger van
WORK ENVIRONMENT/TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Occasional travel nationally or internationally as required by the alternative break programs. Occasional travel to local community-service and volunteer sites.
