SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Safely operate top lift equipment to load, unload, transport, stack, and unstack shipping containers in support of terminal, vessel, rail, and truck operations. Ensure efficient container movement while maintaining safety, productivity, and customer service standards.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
- Safely load and unload containers as directed by the Terminal Operating System (TOS) using the onboard computer.
- Maintain accurate container location records by entering and updating data in the Terminal Operating System (TOS) using the onboard computer.
- Demonstrate strong communication and multitasking skills by safely operating equipment while monitoring the Terminal Operating System (TOS), communicating effectively with internal teams via radio and over-the-road drivers via CB radio, and responding to changing operational priorities.
- Service over-the- road truck traffic as work assignments is generated and displayed on computer screen.
- Offload and reload containers onto railcars as required, using the Terminal Operating System (TOS) to verify assignments and accurately record container movements.
- During vessel operations, safely unload import containers from Stevedore equipment and stack in designated yard area.
- During export vessel operations, safely load designated export containers onto stevedore equipment according to stevedore directions.
- Operate equipment to match the crane production levels when servicing vessels (35-40 containers per hour).
- Adapt to changing operational schedules, including overtime, extended hours, weekends, holidays as needed.
- Notify the Heavy Equipment Garage of any maintenance issues or concerns regarding top lift equipment.
- All other duties assigned by management.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- High school diploma or equivalent, and two plus years of experience operating heavy industrial equipment is required.
- Must be able to read and identify container numbers and operate large container handling equipment in a safe manner.
- Customer service and basic computer skills are required.
- Dependability and punctuality are a must.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, grease, oil, and hot and cold seasonal weather conditions. Must follow all safety rules and requirements and be able to climb on and off container handling equipment. Operate to handle 35-40 containers per hour. Overtime, holiday, and weekend work will be required.
