Position Summary:
The Associate Program Director (APD) is a leadership position held by a core faculty member within the Midwifery & Women’s Health Programs at Thomas Jefferson University. The APD works collaboratively with the Program Director, core faculty, and university partners to ensure program excellence, accreditation compliance, and an outstanding student experience. This role blends academic leadership, curriculum oversight, student advising, and faculty development into one and the APD serves as the acting program leader in the Program Director’s absence.
Associate Program Director (APD) Key Job Responsibilities:
These responsibilities are carried out in collaboration with the Program Director. The Associate Program Director is expected to work closely with program leadership to ensure continuity, shared decision-making, and effective program operations.
Academic & Curriculum Leadership
Work with program leadership, specifically the Program Director, other Program/Associate Program Directors, and the core faculty to ensure the program delivers the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for competency development, successful program completion, and safe entry level practice into the midwifery profession.
Review and recommend curriculum revisions as needed, including curriculum mapping, creation of learning outcomes, and development of instructional objectives related to courses.
Recommend and implement revisions to program policies and procedures related to didactic and clinical curriculum.
Collaborate with the Program Director to update student handbook annually.
Support the program in meeting all accreditation requirements.
Assist with the development of short- and long-range strategic plans.
Student Affairs & Advising
Work with Enrollment Management to oversee admissions for the master’s and certificate programs, including the course refresher process.
Develop individual plans of study for newly admitted students.
Assign faculty advisors to students and track student performance throughout the didactic and clinical phases.
Provide oversight and guidance to course faculty in managing students with academic difficulties.
Oversee, manage, and troubleshoot day-to-day program events related to students, informing or involving the PD as needed.
Serves as an advisor for students in the master’s and certificate programs.
Faculty Development & Program Operations
Provide mentoring to new and instructional faculty related to teaching, course coordination and assessment.
Coordinate with Program Director/Chair to ensure leadership presence during operational days and hours.
Oversee program management and function in the Program Director’s absence.
Serve as course faculty; course load varies each semester depending on FTE.
Facilitate and ensure open communication, discussion, and collaboration within the program and among the Program Director, faculty, students, and staff.
Liaise with other university departments such as the Registrar, Enrollment Management, Counseling Services, and Health Services as needed.
Serve on departmental committees as required.
Job Description
Required Qualifications:
Education Requirements :
Graduate degree (master’s or doctoral degree) in Midwifery, Nursing, or a related health sciences field from an accredited institution.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations :
Current Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) or Certified Midwife (CM) credential required.
Active, unrestricted licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Maintenance of all required continuing education and recertification standards.
Experience Requirements:
Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience and demonstrated leadership responsibilities within a midwifery or health professions program.
Minimum of two (2) years of clinical practice experience in midwifery.
Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, leadership, and management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a consistent record of professional conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree (DNP, PhD, or equivalent) in a relevant field is strongly preferred.
Experience with programmatic accreditation processes (i.e., ACME, ACNM)
Prior experience in academic administration, including curriculum design or program assessment.
Familiarity with student information systems, learning management systems (i.e., Canvas)
Record of scholarly activity, research, or professional presentations in midwifery or women’s health.
Experience working with diverse student populations and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
