We are looking for an experienced In-House General Counsel who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex legal and regulatory challenges, and wants to play a key role in supporting a growing mortgage organization. This is a high-impact leadership position that partners closely with executive leadership, compliance, and operational teams across the company.
What You’ll Do
As In-House General Counsel at Barrett, you will serve as the company’s primary legal advisor, helping guide business decisions while ensuring compliance with mortgage lending regulations, real estate laws, employment matters, and regulatory requirements. You will play a critical role in managing legal risk, supporting audit readiness, and protecting the company’s operations and reputation.
Your day might include:

Providing legal guidance on residential mortgage lending compliance, including federal and state regulations such as RESPA, TILA/Reg Z, TRID, ECOA, and licensing requirements
- Managing responses to state regulatory audits, examinations, and agency inquiries, including remediation strategies and corrective action guidance
- Advising leadership on real estate matters, including purchase agreements, title concerns, and closing disputes
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, vendor agreements, and internal policies
- Partnering with Compliance and HR teams on labor and employment matters, including employee relations, wage and hour compliance, and workplace policies
- Supporting responses to consumer complaints and communications with regulatory agencies, including the CFPB and state regulators
- Providing legal oversight related to loan origination, broker operations, and third-party vendor relationships
- Assisting with litigation management, dispute resolution, and overall risk mitigation strategies
- Monitoring regulatory and legislative changes impacting mortgage lending, employment law, and financial services operations
- Collaborating with executive leadership to strengthen governance, controls, and operational compliance across the organization
What You Bring
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in Arizona, or ability to obtain promptly
- 5+ years of legal experience in mortgage lending, real estate law, financial services, or a related field
- Strong knowledge of federal mortgage regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience managing state audits, regulatory examinations, or enforcement actions
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to operate confidently in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and ability to work collaboratively across departments
Preferred Experience
- Prior in-house counsel experience
- Mortgage brokerage or correspondent lending environment experience
- Experience with labor and employment law
- Multi-state compliance and licensing oversight
- Direct interaction with state regulators and audit bodies
