Position Summary
PPD is seeking a detail-oriented Fabrication Technician to join our team. This is a hands-on role where you will be trained to fabricate precision optical components using a variety of processes and equipment. Ideal for candidates interested in building a long-term career in optics or precision manufacturing. As needed you will receive training to perform various tasks required for the fabrication of precision optical components, such as beveling, grinding, polishing, sawing, and drilling.
Responsibilities
- Fabricate and process precision optical components using techniques such as beveling, grinding, polishing, sawing, and drilling
- Inspect and test products in accordance with MIL and/or ISO specifications
- Interpret work instructions, mechanical drawings, and optical prints
- Operate and maintain fabrication equipment
- Perform visual and dimensional inspection using microscopes, interferometers, autocollimators, calipers, and micrometers
- Handle fragile optical components with care
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with cleanroom standards
- Basic shaping and fabrication of medium-difficulty components
- Beveling (polished, double, and off-angle)
- Blocking techniques (pitch button, cold blocking, Norland transfer, alignment)
- Grinding (steep radius, cylinders, wedge components)
- Polishing (spindle, double-sided, CNC polishing)
- Slurry maintenance (monitoring Baume and pH levels)
- Pouring and preparing pitch laps
- Reading and interpreting detailed fabrication specifications
- Performing optical measurement and inspection (Zygo, fringe patterns, surface quality)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to read and follow technical drawings and instructions
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
- Ability to work independently after training
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Interest in developing a career in optics manufacturing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in optical fabrication or precision manufacturing
- Familiarity with grinding, polishing, beveling, and inspection processes
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and optical specifications
- Experience with precision measurement tools (microscopes, interferometers, calipers, etc.)
- Knowledge of ISO/MIL standards and cleanroom practices is a plus
- Strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and teamwork skills
