POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor, the LST is responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users of the Laboratory Services in order to ensure the department is able to operate efficiently and to successfully fulfill its mission. LSTs also provide training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The basic responsibilities of the Laboratory Support Technician include:
Specimen Processing
Customer Service and Communication
Teamwork
Information System Operation
Training
Specimen Processing
Understands study protocols and processes specimens accordingly.
Prepares the workstation with all essential supplies to ensure smooth processing of specimens.
Receives and verifies identification of specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.
Labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.
Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections with in specific time frames.
Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, and follows all special handling instructions.
Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for send out to reference laboratories.
Customer Service and Communication
Teamwork
Manages time appropriately and meets BMC standards for attendance and punctuality.
Help coworkers on different benches as needed.
Follows department guidelines for dress code.
Documents activities related to Quality Improvement initiatives.
Assists in the pickup and delivery of specimens.
Attends department meetings or reviews minutes and documents the review.
Information Systems
Utilizes technical training and acquires in-depth knowledge of the Sunquest LIS and its functions.
Performs Sunquest order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions.
Performs patient registration functions, including information updates.
Ensures current information in the specimen order or comment.

OTHER DUTIES:
Performs other duties as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Works in a clinical laboratory where there is some exposure to unpleasant odors, hazardous materials, toxins and infectious specimens but hazards are limited when proper protocols are followed.
2. Works requires frequent walking and standing, and regular visual strain while closely examining specimens.

Compensation Range:
$20.12- $26.02
