Position Summary
Performs general carpentry work involved in repairing, maintaining, and constructing of buildings, offices, and furnishings to accomplish structural, cosmetic, aesthetic, functional and weatherproofing elements, both interior and exterior. Works with various machines and hand tools common to the carpentry trade. May prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with building codes or acceptable trade practices.
Emergency Designation: Essential Employee - Indispensable to the emergency service function of the department or division and required to assist the department or division in meeting the operational needs.
Essential Functions
- Repairs broken and malfunctioning furniture, doors, windows, locks, glass panes and other types of equipment; makes and installs window frames and trim, doors, flooring, siding, sheathing, stairs, railing, cabinets, office partitions, shelves, and built-in furniture.
- Constructs and repairs buildings and structures using wood or metal studs.
- Replaces damaged ceiling panels, wall coverings and flooring.
- Builds bookcases, cabinets, tables, partitions, and other types of furniture.
- Makes various types of rafter cuts; lays out and cuts stair stringers; erects scaffolding; constructs and installs cribbing and forms for concrete; sets and operates a variety of woodworking machines including power saws and attachments, planers, jointers, sanders, electric drills, and routers.
- Estimates amounts of materials/equipment needed for various types of carpentry construction and maintenance work.
- Shovels snow and/or operates equipment used in snow removal.
- May be assigned work of other crafts, as needed or in an emergency.
- Prepares appropriate reports and maintains records.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities & Services.
Essential Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of vocational school carpentry program.
- Three (3) years of experience in carpentry work involving the layout, construction, repair and maintenance of buildings, offices, and furnishings.
- Ability to carry out directions and/or work from blueprints or drawings and to take all necessary safety precautions.
- Knowledge of all equipment used in carpentry work.
- A valid New Jersey Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Somerset County policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with County facilities.
A valid Class B CDL

Salary: $50,000 - $55,000/year
Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
