SALARY
All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($7,657). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($8,044).
JOB SUMMARY
Under direction, performs journey-level plumbing, refrigeration, electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance work independently on kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, disposals, pumps, motors, steam kettles, ovens, and compressors; installs or relocates equipment; and performs related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES-
Services, repairs, replaces, troubleshoots, and maintains walk-in and reach-in freezers, refrigerators, ice makers, and milk coolers replacing components including motors, Freon, belts, thermometers, thermostats, and adjusts controls to accommodate specific types of Freon being used in any particular appliance.

Repairs, descales, and maintains dishwashers and electric or gas water and booster heaters.

Inspects, tests, and performs preventative maintenance on all kitchen equipment to ensure the equipment is working properly.

Replaces valves, belts, filters, bearings, gears, and motor parts.

Observes electrical, pressure or vacuum gauges, meters, automatic recording devices, or other indicator lights or devices and adjust controls to ensure efficient operation.

Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs convection and standard ovens, retherm ovens, steam ovens, industrial mixers, choppers, steam kettles, tilting braisers, steamers, and combi-ovens.

Installs gas valves, electric fans, thermocouples, pilot lights, and door springs.

Repairs and maintains heating and refrigeration units on food carts; and replaces parts on salad bars and mounts sneeze guards.

Installs electrical lines by running conduit, pulling wire, installing outlets; and repairs motors, switches, plugs, and appliance cords.

Replaces pipes, faucets, and reversing and standard switches; locates and repairs leaks; repairs or replaces industrial garbage disposals, clears minor blockages from sinks and disposals; cuts and threads pipe, and sweats copper pipes.

Assembles a variety of kitchen racks and carts, mounts computer brackets for touch screens.

Repairs and replaces small appliances such as mixers and electric and manual can openers.

Maintains records of materials and time spent performing various maintenance and repair jobs.

Requisitions, orders, purchases, and picks-up and stores parts, tools, materials, and equipment.

Keeps up-to-date with certifications required to work on specific kitchen equipment.
-
Keeps work area orderly.
-
Recommends repair or replacement of specific kitchen equipment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Education and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent and any combination equivalent to three years of experience (equivalent to full-time work) in the journey-level repair of commercial and/or industrial kitchen equipment. Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate. Must possess and maintain a valid Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Usage Certificate (608, Universal).
You must submit a recent (within the last 30 days) original DMV driving record, and a copy of your valid Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Usage Certificate by the oral rating exam.
Knowledge of:-
Electrical, plumbing, steam, gas, electronic and refrigeration methods, current technology, principles and practices related to commercial and/or industrial kitchens located in school district buildings.

Kitchen maintenance and repair, including circuit tracing and troubleshooting skills related to electric motors, pumps, compressors, and electronic sensors.

Current refrigeration technology and EPA regulations.

Tools and equipment used in repairing kitchen equipment.
-
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, supplies, and chemicals.

Health and safety regulations related to the position.
Ability to:-
Analyze and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and plumbing repairs, using appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Analyze, interpret and apply complex and technical manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, plans, specifications and instructions.

Work cooperatively with others such as outside contractors and district maintenance, custodial, food service, and school staff.

VETERAN'S CREDIT: Veterans shall have an additional five (5) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. "Veteran" as used in this article means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war, or national emergency declared by the President of the United States of America, and who has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. "Armed forces" means the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. At least thirty (30) days of active service are required to obtain veteran preference points.
Disabled veterans shall have an additional ten (10) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. A "disabled veteran" as used in this article means any veteran who is currently declared by the United States Veterans Administration to be ten percent (10%) or more disabled as a result of service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Proof of disability shall be deemed conclusive if it is of record in the United States Veterans Administration.
Additional eligibility may be granted based on future changes to the law and verification from the Veteran's Administration or the United States Office of Personnel Management.
In order to obtain credit, the applicant shall furnish satisfactory proof of qualifying military service prior to establishment of the eligibility list. No adjustment of rank on the list shall be made when such proof is presented thereafter.
A veteran may be credited veterans' preference points only to obtain initial employment in the district. Thereafter, the only additional points for an open examination shall be seniority points granted in accord with section 4220.3(C)2.
HIRING PROCEDURES: Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit, fitness and qualifications. The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission. All Classified Management will serve a twelve (12) month probation.
EXAMINATION FOR TUBERCULOSIS: Proof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.
FINGERPRINTING: All new employees will be fingerprinted.
