Job Summary
To provide a positive patient experience while performing, high quality patient care to current and potential patients.
Description of Duties
1. The Medical Assistant (MA) will be able to demonstrate proficiency in all established duties listed below:
2. Obtain and appropriately documents authorization in the designated (auth/cert or referral) clinical inbox for required testing and/or referrals as required to ensure patients are provided with high quality health care.
3. Able to adequately maintain the clinical inbox related to referrals and schedule order. The MA will insure all testing that is canceled or rescheduled is completed per provider’s order or that he/she is actively communicating with patients and providers when testing is not completed as expected and the order updated appropriately (either canceled or expected date updated).
4. Assist provider within office procedures that is within the scope of that provider.
5. Maintains full lab oversight within the clinic (POCT, in-office collections and processing).
6. Functions as an MA in a Walk in Clinic.
7. Manages and collaborates with providers on intake of clinical calls as well as result reporting and/or refill request.
8. Maintains skills and can work side by side with the provider to ensure the patient face to face encounters are completed from intake to discharge.
9. Assemble information concerning patients’ clinical background and referral needs once received from the ordering provider. If enough information is not done by the provider, the referral specialist will return to that provide and tell them what additional tests are required in order to get the test approved.
10. Once the required tests are complete the MA will contact the insurance company to ensure prior approval requirements are met.
11. Per referral guideline with the specialist that patients are being referred to, the MA will provide appropriate clinical information to the specialist that is needed to make an appointment for the patient.
12. The MA will contact the patient with the results from the test performed and let them know further testing is required and they should be receiving a call from the specialist with their appointments day/time.
13. At times the provider’s order may be written incorrectly, the providers have given the MA the authority to reprint the order correctly when needed.
14. Required to order supplies from our central supply department.
15. Serves as a preceptor, as requested.

17. Perform all other duties as assigned.
18. Cleans and disinfects prior to discarding or forwarding to Sterile Services and/or disposes of equipment utilized with clinic specific procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
19. Performs as a team member and serves on teams/committees as requested.
20. May provide vaccine management including ordering and monitoring vaccine usage/wastage, facilitating the maintenance of the vaccines, participating in educational opportunities, utilizing the CDC guidelines as well as standard protocol for immunization management as indicated by Louisiana Immunization Network, and completing reportable documentation as recommended by Louisiana Department of State Health Services.
21. Assist physicians and other staff members, as needed.
22. Communicate effectively by expressing ideas clearly, actively listening and always following appropriate channel of communication. Demonstrate responsiveness to others ensuring a complete follow up on matters requiring additional attention.
23. Follow any other job-related instructions and perform any other job-related duties as requested by department management.
24. Precertification testing that is required by an insurance company when applicable.
25. Send referral information to specialist when ordered by a in house provider.
26. Call patients with results of test and let them know further imaging. specialist appointments are required.
27. Consistently attend monthly staff meetings.
28. Follow associated Hood Memorial Hospital compliance programs and federal and state regulatory guidelines.
29. Performs other duties within the scope of unlicensed personnel as assigned.
A. Experience, Knowledge and Skill
1. Previous Experience Required:
- < or equal to 1 year of clinical experience in the ambulatory setting.
2. Specialized or Technical Education Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior to completion of clinical orientation, employee must provide and maintain BLS certification.
- Completion of an accredited MA program or field of study.
- Medical Assistant II must have current certification as a medical assistant.
