JOB Under direction, performs a variety of basic law enforcement activities to prevent crime, maintain law and order, and identify and apprehend suspects. The majority of positions in this class are assigned to the patrol division, with others assigned to investigation, community and youth services, and administration. All may be called upon at any time to respond to a major crime scene or other law enforcement priority outside their regular assignment. Performs related responsibilities as required.

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by the employee of this class. Not all assigned duties may be listed. Marginal duties are those which are non-essential job functions for this class.

Patrols an assigned area for the prevention of crime and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and arrests violators as necessary. Responds to radio dispatch, telephone instructions, and/or citizen requests to scenes of disorder or crime as assigned.

Conducts preliminary or follow-up investigations of crimes and disturbances, including burglaries, thefts, robberies, narcotics action, deaths, assaults, and accidents.

Makes traffic stops and detains suspicious persons; issues citations; makes arrests; appears in court and gives testimony as arresting officer; transports prisoners.

Assists in the investigation of traffic accidents and crimes; secures crime scenes; interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects; and identifies, collects, and preserves evidence.

Assists the public; may provide medical assistance or stabilize situations pending the arrival of medical professionals; answers questions; directs traffic; maintains knowledge of and refers those in need to public service agencies.

Conducts building and field searches; checks doors or windows for building security.

May participate in or be assigned to crime prevention, community relations, investigations, or school resource-type programs, communications, or records; may serve as a desk officer; may perform courier services in the delivery of materials, supplies, or equipment.

Writes reports and field notes; may participate in departmental studies; participates in staff development; attends briefings and training sessions; maintains patrol vehicle, firearms, and other related assigned equipment.

May participate in public education programs and make presentations regarding traffic safety and a variety of crime prevention topics; may serve as Department representative to other public agencies, task forces, or committees.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Special Requirement:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License.
Must be at least 21 years of age by time of appointment.
Candidates other than promotional applicants must pass a police background investigation.
Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain the POST Basic Certificate within eighteen (18) months of hire.
