American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Float pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology

492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
-
Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuro, oncology, orthopedic, urology, and general Med/Surg patients such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and end-of-life comfort care

Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit and acuity

Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)

Day and night shifts available: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM, 36 hrs/week with potential for 48

Scheduling runs on a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling — Smart Square is used

Weekend rotation required: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month

No on-call requirements

EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)

IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs

Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can submit pending licensure with an ETA)

Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required

Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required

Trauma or surgical unit experience required for Trauma Surgical unit (at least 1 year)
-
Skills required vary by unit but broadly include: IV starts, wound care, trach care, chest tubes, NGT, PEG tubes, foley care, central line care, and medication administration

Chemo administration certification highly preferred for the Med/Surg Oncology unit

Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible

Required documents for consideration: 1 reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months, copy of certifications, full SSN, and date of birth (day and month)

Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio), a charge nurse, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists

Orientation for travelers new to the facility consists of 24 hours of classroom training followed by 24 hours on the unit; orientation for returning travelers absent for 1+ year follows the same structure

Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
-
Candidates must be aware of facility blackout/RTO dates that may require manager approval; pre-planned time off during these periods is not guaranteed

Scrubs: any color accepted; parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2–4 only

First-time travelers are welcome to apply with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience

Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
